Given the high level of measles transmission in Utah at this time, the Utah Department of Health is now recommending an early first MMR at 6 months of age, in addition to the standard recommendation of an MMR vaccine at 12 months. It is also now recommended that toddlers receive the second MMR as soon as possible at least 1 month after the first MMR is given, rather than waiting until age 4-6 as previously recommended.

Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious complications including death, pneumonia, and encephalitis both in the immediate illness and years after a child is infected. The MMR vaccine is 97% effective at preventing measles, and is safe, with exceedingly rare serious side effects. It does not cause or increase risk of autism or developmental delay.

If you have been on the fence about vaccinating your child against measles, please vaccinate them as soon as possible.

If your child has symptoms of measles (fever, cough, runny nose, pink eyes, and a rash that starts a few days in to the illness) and is not fully vaccinated with two doses of MMR, please do not come in to the office, but call if you need to be seen, and we will evaluate your child in the car to protect the rest of our patients, including infants and those who are immunocompromised or unable to receive vaccines at this time.

Please note that our practice continues to follow and recommend the routine immunization schedule supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, including vaccines for hepatitis A and B, rotavirus, influenza, RSV, and meningococcal disease, among others. These recommendations are based on established clinical guidelines and the abundant scientific evidence supporting the safety and effectiveness of these vaccines.

For more information on this schedule, see: https://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/immunizations/Pages/Recommended-Immunization-Schedules.aspx

With sunny days ahead, we are getting a lot of questions about sun protection, especially for younger kids and babies. A few tips from the AAP and healthy children.org
—keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight when possible. Hat, umbrellas, and cool spf clothing can help!
—Use broad-spectrum sunscreen, at least spf 15, reapplying every 2 hours and after coming out of water
—Commercial sunscreen can be used on smaller exposed areas of skin on infants under 6 months. Mineral stick sunscreens with at least 20% zinc oxide are a great option especially for infants and toddlers, but should be applied in a very thick layer to be effective
—As a general rule, sunscreen sprays are less preferred for infants and toddlers, due to propellant chemicals. However, any type of sunscreen is better than none!

Happy nurses day and thank you to our amazing nurses, Nikki and Madi! We all know nurses help care for patients in the office, but did you know they also go above and beyond helping patients plug in to community resources, coordinating care with specialists, answering questions and educating parents and patients, keeping our office supplied and running smoothly, training staff, and making sure we are all up to date with current AAP and CDC recommendations? Our nurses are fantastic, and we surely would be lost without them!
