The Kankakee County Fair kicks off this week, and between the midway dust, the sun overhead, and a full day on your feet, your eyes are working harder than you might realize.

July is also UV Safety Month, and a day outdoors like this is exactly the reminder it is meant to be: UV exposure and airborne dust and pollen can leave eyes irritated, red, or unusually dry by the end of the day, especially if you already deal with seasonal allergies or dry eye.

A pair of UV protective sunglasses and a few extra blinks go further than people expect, but if redness, irritation, or blurry spells become a regular part of your summer rather than a one day thing, that is worth mentioning at your next eye exam. A general eye exam is also a good way to catch small issues, like early dry eye or allergy related irritation, before fair season turns into back to school season.

Once glaucoma is diagnosed, the real work is in the monitoring, not a single test. A glaucoma visit at FSN typically includes a pressure check, a visual field test to map any blind spots, and optical imaging of the optic nerve to track subtle changes over time. None of these tests are uncomfortable, but skipping or spacing them out too far can let real changes go unnoticed, since glaucoma rarely announces itself with pain or obvious vision loss in the early stages.

How often you need to be seen depends on your risk factors and how stable your eye pressure has been, which is something your doctor sets individually rather than on a generic schedule.

If you have a family history of glaucoma or have not had your eye pressure checked recently, that is worth bringing up at your next visit.

Clear Lens Exchange (CLE) and cataract surgery are very similar procedures, but they are performed for different reasons.

CLE is an elective vision correction procedure typically chosen by adults over 40 who want to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses before cataracts develop. It can correct presbyopia, nearsightedness, and farsightedness while also preventing cataracts from forming in the future.

Cataract surgery, on the other hand, is performed when the eye's natural lens has become cloudy and vision is being affected. Because cataracts are a medical condition, cataract surgery is considered medically necessary when they interfere with your daily activities. Many of the same advanced technology lens options, including PanOptix® Pro, are available with both procedures.

If you're wondering whether you're a candidate for Clear Lens Exchange or cataract surgery, a personalized evaluation can determine which option is right for you.

Cataract surgery has come a long way, and at Fisher-Swale-Nicholson Eye Center, our surgeons offer advanced laser-assisted cataract surgery using LENSAR® technology.

Before surgery begins, the LENSAR system creates a detailed 3D map of your eye, allowing your surgeon to customize the procedure based on your eye's unique anatomy. The laser is used to perform key steps of the procedure with exceptional precision, including creating corneal incisions, opening the cataract capsule, and softening the cataract before it is removed.

Because every eye is different, this personalized approach helps our surgeons plan and perform each procedure with a high level of accuracy.

If cloudy, blurry, or glare-filled vision is making everyday activities more difficult, a cataract evaluation is the first step in exploring your treatment options.

For patients with wet macular degeneration and certain retinal conditions, eye injections are a common in-office treatment that helps protect vision by reducing fluid leakage in the retina.

If you've been diagnosed with a retinal condition or have been told you may benefit from injection therapy, our team is here to answer your questions and guide you through every step of your care.

LASIK is not the only path to glasses-free vision, and for some patients it is not the best fit.

EVO ICL works differently: instead of reshaping the cornea, a thin lens is placed inside the eye, which makes it a strong option for patients with thin corneas, high prescriptions, or dry eyes who may not be ideal LASIK candidates. It is also reversible, involves no corneal flap, and includes built in UV protection. Many patients who choose EVO ICL also report sharper night vision than they expected.

The right procedure depends on your eyes, your prescription, and your goals, which is exactly what a vision correction screening at FSN is designed to determine.

It is still Dry Eye Awareness Month, and for contact lens wearers, summer brings its own set of challenges.

Pool days, afternoons at the lake, and time on the Kankakee River are summer favorites, but chlorine, natural water, heat, and extended contact lens wear can dry out the surface of your eyes faster than you might expect. Swimming or floating in contacts also increases the risk of irritation and infection because lenses can trap bacteria, chemicals, and other debris against the eye.

If your eyes feel dry, gritty, or uncomfortable by the end of the day, it may not be your contact lenses alone. Your tear film, lens fit, or both could be contributing to your symptoms.

A dry eye evaluation can help identify the cause of your discomfort and provide treatment options to keep your eyes healthy. If you're tired of dealing with contacts and glasses altogether, now may also be a great time to learn whether LASIK, PRK, EVO ICL, or another vision correction procedure could help you enjoy summer with greater freedom.

Some frames are chosen for how they look. LINDBERG frames are chosen for how little you feel them. They carry the same philosophy behind every LINDBERG design: minimal materials, maximum durability, and a fit that feels closer to wearing nothing at all.

Danish designers have spent decades refining this approach, using titanium and precision engineering instead of bulk to make frames that hold their shape and color for years. It is a different way of thinking about eyewear, and it is one of the reasons LINDBERG has a dedicated following inside our Optical Shoppe.

Stop in and try a pair to feel the difference for yourself.

July is Dry Eye Awareness Month, and Illinois summers bring their own version of the problem. Between window units, central air, and long stretches indoors avoiding the heat, many patients notice more burning, grittiness, or blurry spells in July than they do in January.

Constant airflow speeds up tear evaporation, and eyes do not always recover on their own. Dry eye is not something to treat with whatever drops happen to be on the shelf.

At FSN, a dry eye evaluation looks at what is actually causing your symptoms, whether that is tear quality, eyelid health, or environmental triggers, so the treatment plan fits the cause and not just the surface symptom.

Call (815) 932-2020 for a Dry Eye evaluation.
