Willie H. Wright, affectionately known as “Brother,” gained his wings and peacefully transitioned at 2:07 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026. Born May 2, 1944, in Caroline County, Virginia, to the late Michael Angelo and Lillian Elizabeth Wright, Willie was the youngest of seventeen children. He was raised with a deep appreciation for family, faith, hard work, and service—values that guided him throughout his life.
A 1963 graduate of Union High School, Willie continued his education while working two jobs to support his growing family, ultimately earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. His dedication led to a distinguished career of 25 years with the United States Federal Government, supporting intelligence activities around the world. Following retirement, he served an additional 17 years as a government contractor, completing more than 40 years of service. One of his family’s treasured experiences was living in Frankfurt, Germany.
On March 7, 1965, Willie married his high school sweetheart, Ellen L. Wright. For 61 years, they shared a life rooted in love, faith, commitment, and family. Willie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and provider who took great pride in creating opportunities and opening doors for those he loved.
Willie’s faith was at the heart of his life. He became a Deacon at an early age and faithfully served his church in numerous capacities, including Chairman of the Deacon Board, Planning Committee, Sunday School Committee, Pastor’s Aide, and Sunrise and Thanksgiving Committees. A faithful tither and generous servant, he gave his time, talents, resources, and hands to support and preserve his church for future generations. He even shared his love of gardening by planting flowers around the church.
Willie believed that serving God meant serving others. He was known for his famous mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese, which became cherished traditions among family, friends, and his church family. A brilliant Electrical Engineer and gifted craftsman, Willie could build, repair, or create almost anything. He loved to talk, never met a stranger, and could turn a chance encounter into a lasting conversation.
Above all, Willie loved his family. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 61 years, Ellen; children Angela (Eric), Gerald (Jo Ann), and Ianthe’ “Tay” (Antoine); five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother; two sisters; extended family; more than 40 nieces and nephews; and a host of friends whose lives were touched by his love, generosity, and devotion.
Willie shared an especially close bond with his grandson, Joshua “Josh,” whom he loved and raised as a son. As he did with Gerald, Willie instilled in Josh strong Christian values, a powerful work ethic, devotion to family, and a sense of responsibility. Seeing Gerald and Josh become devoted Christians and family men was a tremendous source of pride.
Willie “Brother” Wright leaves a legacy measured not only by what he accomplished or built, but by the people he loved, the family he provided for, the church he faithfully served, and the countless lives he touched. He loved God, loved his family, worked hard, gave generously, and always made time for others. His faith was not simply something he professed—it was something he lived.
