A Safe Place Means No Shame. No Blame. đź’™
Listen before judgement.
At Nurture and Light, we believe education is an important part of creating safer communities—and that starts with the way we respond when someone shares that they have been hurt, abused, manipulated, or victimized.
Victim shaming and victim blaming can sound like:
“Why didn’t you leave?”
“Why did you go back?”
“Why didn’t you tell someone sooner?”
“You should have known better.”
“Why did you put yourself in that situation?”
“You shouldn’t have said that.”
“You shouldn’t have done that.”
But trauma is rarely that simple.
Fear, manipulation, coercion, financial dependence, trauma bonds, threats, shame, isolation, and survival responses can all affect how someone responds to an unsafe situation. The responsibility for harmful behavior belongs to the person who chose to cause the harm—not the person who experienced it.
Education helps us replace judgment with understanding.
Instead of asking, “Why didn’t you leave?” we can ask, “What made it difficult to feel safe enough to leave?”
Instead of, “Why didn’t you tell someone?” we can say, “I’m glad you felt safe enough to tell me now.”
At Nurture and Light, we are committed to providing spaces where people can speak without fear of being shamed, blamed, dismissed, or silenced. Healing requires safety. Safety requires compassion. And compassion begins when we listen before we judge.
Believe. Educate. Support. Empower.
Everyone deserves a safe place to find their light again. đź’™
