St. Mary's Residential Community and Services

St. Mary's Residential Community and Services St. Mary's mission is to provide a loving, spiritual community that allows individuals living with developmental disabilities to achieve their full potential.

Mary’s campus has many fun activities, including an indoor swimming pool, splash pads, a gymnasium, a beauty shop, several playgrounds, a miniature golf course, a covered horse riding arena, a walking/biking trail, a chapel in which Sunday and holy day Masses are celebrated, and many special events. The children at St. Mary’s reside in either dormitory or group home settings and receive individual

ized care. Each resident has an Individualized Program Plan developed by the Interdisciplinary Team, detailing their strengths and needs and outlining goals and objectives, which when achieved, will allow the individual to function more independently. Residents participate in day-time training either through the Rapides Parish School Board, St. Mary’s Applied Behavior Analysis Learning Center, or Day and Work Programs. Daily living tasks and community outings provide incidental training opportunities to our children, which contribute to their independence. Mary’s staff include two Board Certified Behavior Analysts, who work to promote the comprehensive principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Part of St. Mary’s success for effectively treating children with severe autism is through our ABA Program. This research based program is extremely successful for children with autism and has also proven to be effective for other spectrum disorders. ABA breaks training goals down into small segments and uses positive reinforcement. The ABA
program is utilized in St. Mary’s ABA Learning Center and is currently being introduced throughout the main campus and our group homes.

Work brings more than responsibility — it builds confidence, routine, and independence. Residents Jennifer and BK were all smiles while on their way to one of their important jobs: shredding papers and helping keep things organized. Opportunities like these help residents build valuable work skills, develop responsibility, strengthen independence, and experience the pride that comes from contributing in meaningful ways.

At St. Mary’s, we believe every individual deserves the opportunity to work, learn, grow, and feel accomplished through real-world experiences that encourage confidence and purpose. A shift in perspective can change everything. For Caitlyn’s mom, one of the hardest realizations was understanding that love alone wasn’t enough to provide every level of support her daughter needed.

“I love my daughter. But I knew I couldn’t give her what she needed on my own.” Like many parents, she carried guilt while trying to make the best decision for her child’s future. “I couldn’t let guilt make the decision. I had to think about what was best for her.” That perspective changed everything. At St. Mary’s, Caitlyn found structure, support, encouragement, opportunities for independence, and a community of people committed to helping her grow and thrive. “Love wasn’t the issue. Support was.”

For many families, choosing additional support is not giving up — it’s choosing a path that allows their loved one to receive the care, guidance, and opportunities they deserve while still being surrounded by love every step of the way.

At St. Mary’s, community inclusion means creating opportunities for individuals to not only participate in the community, but to actively give back to it. Our residents recently spent time volunteering at the local food bank, helping organize and prepare items for families in need throughout the community. Opportunities like these are about more than volunteering — they help build confidence, encourage independence, strengthen social skills, and remind our residents that they have meaningful ways to contribute and make a difference.

During a recent visit to St. Mary’s Restaurant and Catering in Metairie, our residents had the incredible opportunity to see themselves featured in the mural displayed inside the restaurant. The excitement, smiles, and pride on their faces said it all. Moments like these are about more than recognition — they’re about belonging, visibility, and seeing yourself represented out in the community in a meaningful way.

Meet Bobby, one of our QIDPs (Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professionals) at St. Mary’s Residential Community & Services. Bobby works closely with residents, staff, and families to help ensure each individual receives the support, guidance, and encouragement they need to thrive. But his role goes far beyond paperwork and meetings. You’ll often find him spending time with residents, checking in throughout the day, celebrating progress, listening to concerns, and building genuine relationships that create trust and connection.

His “boots on the ground” approach is part of what makes St. Mary’s feel like more than a program — it feels like community, support, and family.

Because the best care happens when people know they are seen, valued, and supported every step of the way. Learn more about how St. Mary’s provides a loving, spiritual community where individuals living with developmental disabilities are supported, empowered, and encouraged to achieve their full potential.
