The woman looked at the nonverbal child and said
โI donโt know what autism is, and I donโt care. Just make her stop.โ
A woman nearby asked the mother to take the keys away and make her stop.

Yesterday, after JASE closed, I saw one of our families in the parking lot. The child had taken her momโs car keys and was pressing the buttons.
A woman nearby asked the mother to take the keys away and make her stop.
The mother apologized and explained, โIโm sorry, my daughter has autism. Itโs a disability, just as your mother has a disability that requires you to use a wheelchair for her.โ
My son is 17. Iโve spent most of his life navigating the stares, comments, judgment, and the need to explain behaviors that others donโt understand.
Not everyone will understand autism.
Not everyone will recognize what autism looks like.
But everyone is capable of kindness.
That mother shouldnโt have had to defend or explain her daughter to a stranger just to go about her day.
Weโve spent years building autism AWARENESS.
Now we need to build ACCEPTANCE.
