It’s AAC Awareness Month!

Ms. Kat, our AAC specialist, is sharing some of the different ways we use AAC at Project Speech. AAC isn’t just one device or system—it can include many different ways of communicating!

Follow along as we break down a few of them.


AAC doesn’t always require a device or materials!

Unaided AAC uses our bodies to communicate, including gestures, facial expressions, body language, and signs.

Communication can happen in so many ways—and they all count.

No-tech AAC can include communication tools like core boards!

Core boards use pictures and symbols to give children access to words they can point to throughout their day—helping them request, comment, ask questions, and connect with others.

Low-tech AAC can include simple communication buttons that play a recorded message when pressed.

These tools can give children an easy, accessible way to participate, make choices, share messages, and communicate with others.

High-tech AAC includes speech-generating devices that give children a voice at the touch of a button!

These devices can support children in expressing their thoughts, feelings, questions, ideas, and so much more. AAC isn’t just about asking for what you want—it’s about having a voice in the world.

Bilingual ≠ confusing ‼️

One of the most common concerns we hear from families is whether speaking two languages at home might “delay” or confuse their child. The answer? IT DOESN’T.

Children in bilingual environments are fully capable of learning and using both languages successfully. Mixing languages is a normal part of development, not a sign of a disorder.

In fact, bilingualism can support cognitive flexibility, attention, and overall language growth.

The most important thing you can do is simple:

Speak the languages you and your family speak at home. All of them! 🌎
