Effects of environmental conditions on injury rates at a Colorado ski resort.
Key takeaways are:
🔑 Injury rates are higher on days with less than 1 inch of fresh snow.
🔑 Injury rates decrease by 8% for every addition inch in snowpack.
🔑 There is a 71% increase in injury rates on hardpack days compared to powder days.
With the slow start to winter in there are lots of similarities between our early season conditions and the factors listed for increased injury risk. Stay safe out there.

What makes a good snowboarder good?
This paper was a great review of what physiological qualities make a great athlete in snowboarding.
Highlights from the paper:
1️⃣ Snowboarders have high levels of quad strength. It appears that possessing greater strength in the legs, especially the ability for the body to absorb force at the knee is advantageous in snowboarding.
2️⃣ Performance is not determined by aerobic fitness levels but snowboarders still have a higher than average VO2max (~50mLO2⋅kg-1⋅min-1)
3️⃣ The rear leg is a bit stronger and bigger. There appears to be a ~10% strength and ~14% volume difference between front and rear leg in elite alpine snowboard athletes.
There is a great lack of research related to snowboarding performance but this is a great start by the authors making observations from what's out there. The paper is open source so check the link and give it a read.
