Sustainable CT

Sustainable CT Sustainable CT is a voluntary, sustainable community certification program for CT municipalities. What Makes CT Sustainable?

Sustainable CT supports municipalities in achieving a vision of thriving communities across our state. The statewide initiative created by towns, for towns provides a roadmap, resources, and certification program to help communities become more efficient, healthy, safe, resilient, and livable. With shared vision, practical tools, and collaborative spirit,we are building the a thriving Connecticut

for all residents, today and tomorrow. There are many ways to help local communities thrive. Sustainable CT provides resources to municipalities to support:

• Clean and diverse transportation systems and choices
• Efficient physical infrastructure and operations
• Strategic and inclusive public services
• Dynamic and resilient planning
• Well-stewarded land and natural resources
• Thriving local economies with benefits for all
• Healthy, efficient diverse and affordable housing
• Vibrant and creative cultural ecosystems

How Does It Work?: The Sustainable CT Framework

• Sustainable CT is a roadmap of voluntary actions that will help municipalities be more sustainable.

• Resources and support, including funding, help local communities apply the actions that fit them best.

• The Sustainable CT Certification publicly recognizes municipalities for their sustainability achievements

• Sustainable CT is flexible. Any Connecticut municipality can find ways to become more sustainable – urban or rural, big or small, coastal or inland.

• Sustainable CT prioritizes smart actions that increase sustainability while also saving money, promoting health, and increasing residents’ connection and sense of place. Making CT Sustainable

Sustainable CT is being developed by towns, for towns. Municipal leaders and residents from across the state, the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, and people from key agencies,non-profits, and businesses all partnered to help create the program. The Institute for Sustainable Energy at Eastern Connecticut State University is coordinating and supporting the initiative. Here are some ways you can get involved now:

•Sign Up for Updates! As Sustainable CT develops, we’ll share news on program development, how to participate and the launch of the certification program.

• Participate in regional stakeholder forums.Learn more about Sustainable CT and share your ideas and opinions.

•Spread the Word. Help prepare your own municipality to participate in Sustainable CT by sharing info with your municipal leaders, through social media and word of mouth.

Stream Smart is a training program and resource for anyone interested in planning, designing, or constructing road-stream crossings. The goal of Stream Smart is to connect fish and wildlife habitat while protecting roads and public safety, and to prepare for the large and frequent storm events that have been washing out roads throughout the Northeast. These full-day trainings will consist of lectures, a stream-table demonstration of how Stream Smart crossings work, and an optional field site visit to look at example crossings.

Join the Farmington River Watershed Association and the The Nature Conservancy in Connecticut for their next Stream Smart Training, taking place in-person on June 17 at the Roaring Brook Nature Center (70 Gracey Road, Canton, CT).

We are happy to announce that our Community Match Fund, a unique crowdfunding and grant matching program, has exceeded $5 million in funds directly invested in community-led projects across the state.

The Community Match Fund (CMF) was created to further the impact of our mission by empowering communities to implement local sustainability projects. Through this program, we match local crowdfunding efforts dollar-for-dollar to assist in bringing community-driven ideas to life, such as the addition of a pollinator garden, a community composting initiative, a local arts and culture program, tree planting, greenways for biking and walking, or more.

The Sustainable CT Fellows are back in action! Last week, they had the pleasure of attending an in-person training taking place at the Capitol Region Council of Governments - CRCOG.

Fellows got the chance to learn everything about Sustainable CT and ask as many questions as possible. Afterwards, a walking tour around the City was much needed and a perfect way to end the day.
