One of the main pieces that drew me to functional medicine is the ability to share your story. This is one of the most important fundamental basic aspects you’ll discover in the discovery experience appt (although, there’s usually nothing basic about peoples stories). Some of them are profound.

I wore my warrior bracket on this special day…
A friends husband made this bracelet for me several years ago. Fred’s a true artist. He makes beautiful jewelry from 100 year old spoons. She was there from the very beginning… Ashley knows the story and thought this quote sounded just like me. I am forever grateful to her and Fred. I’m not sure if she will see this but thank you Ashley and Fred.

“Watch me I will go to my own sun And if I’m burned by its fire I will fly on scorched wings”

I actually love this quote. It’s bold, unapologetic (one of my favorite words, lol) and speaks to resilience.

The heart of this quote goes something like this…
“Watch me. I will go to my own sun. And if I’m burned by its fire, I will fly on scorched wings.”

“Watch me…”

This is a declaration. It’s not arrogance—it’s resolve.

It says:

Don’t tell me what I can’t do. Watch what happens.

“I will go to my own sun.”

The sun represents a person’s calling, purpose, dream, truth, or destiny.

It means:
• I won’t live someone else’s life.
• I won’t dim my light to make others comfortable.
• I’ll pursue what I believe God has placed before me, even if others don’t understand.

“And if I’m burned by its fire…”

Every worthwhile calling comes with risk.

This acknowledges:
• There will be pain.
• There will be criticism.
• There may be failure.
• The journey might leave scars.

The meaning isn’t pretending life will be easy.

“I will fly on scorched wings.”

I think this is the most powerful line.

Even if I’m wounded…
Even if I’m changed…
Even if I carry scars…

I will still fly.

And even if I fall down and have to crawl my way back up you will always be here to place my feet on solid ground. Pick me up, Lord! The scars don’t end the story—they become part of it.

I think the reason why Ashley she chose this quote is because I didn’t choose the easy road.

After what happened with our son, i could have stayed where I was. Instead, I pursued degrees, functional medicine, functional psychiatry, created Turning Tides, and built Psychiatry Reimagined™ because I believed there had to be a better way. Not just for us but for others too.

There were setbacks.
There was criticism.
There were moments of exhaustion.

Yet I kept moving.

In that sense, the quote isn’t about never getting burned.

It’s about refusing to let the burn keep me from flying.

From a Christian perspective

The quote isn’t explicitly Christian—it centers on human determination. But through the lens of my faith, it takes on a richer meaning.

Instead of:

“I will fly because of my own strength,”

My story is more like:

“By His grace, I will walk into the calling He has placed before me. And if the journey leaves scars, they will become a testimony of His faithfulness. My wings may be scorched, but by His strength, I will still soar.”

That reminds me of Isaiah 40:31:

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles…”

Perhaps that’s why the bracelet has meant so much to me over the years. It doesn’t just symbolize perseverance—it reminds me that every scar I’ve carried has become part of the story God is still writing. My wings may bear the marks of the fire, but they are still lifting me toward the purpose He prepared for me.

I praise the Lord for those who were there for me and my family in those early days… Believe me, there were many who checked out. It hurt but I’m like, oh well, your loss.

I’m sharing one of the most anchoring pieces of our story here….

I wanted to reach out to those who have already liked our page, those who have ever visited our office, and all those who will join us at some point… Turning Tides exists not for money and fame but to be here for our community (in person & online) when they are in need.

Today is an “anchor” day to remind me WHY I do what I do. So on hard days—on all the days—my brain questions why I even try… Why do I even care…. It's today that I transport back as my reminder of WHY my work / my passion is so vital. All those who say no, who want something for nothing, and who are ungrateful—I’m reminded of the ONE who needs what we have to give. THAT ONE is the one worth it all.
It’s been😭 … 20 years, my heart stopped, and I couldn't breathe…

Some days will never be forgotten. Today is one of those days. It’s been 20 years😳. 1/2 his life + 2 year 💔😭😭😭

“Be still and know I am God!” (Ps 46:10) because you’re getting ready not to be able to breathe. Was the thought that ravaged my mind in the moments I stood in the middle of the street, staring at the ambulance just a few feet away, attempting to wrap my head around what had occurred in the timeshare just a little bit before?

Worst day of our lives, Bill Hutchinson

I look back over the past 20 years, and even though it’s not perfect, it’s better than it could’ve been. Some may think it’s horrific now but if they only knew what it was like before they would be shaken to the inner core of their soul…. We NEVER want to go back and experience that hell ever again…. I’m thankful I still get to hear his voice, hug him, and say I love you 💜 I cherish all those little moments along the way.

Although I knew something was shifting several months before this day. The book the Lord had me choose for me and my employees to read for our monthly book club, “Just Enough Light for the Step I'm On by Stormie Omartian,” the visions I had leading up to the event, waking many times in the middle of the night, jolted to a sitting position as prayers were spoken out of my mouth from a dead sleep… Moving me to change careers. I didn’t fully understand or see the urgency to do so until this day, 20 years ago. I know the Lord predestined me to this place… this mission… This calling…

October 27th, 2005 the mission was conceived and on July 24, 2006 it was birthed @ 11 pm somehow I knew all those previous experiences were coming alive into a reality I could have never perceived unless I took the walk down to the depths of hell.

I can’t believe this evening will mark twenty years standing behind a police officer in the middle of a highway; as we both moved closer to the ambulance, the Lord stopped me dead in my tracks. He said very loudly to my heart, “Be still and know that I am God‼️” (Ps 46:10). In this instance, I knew it was highly detrimental for me not to waver in the truth I knew and that was the fact that it didn’t matter what I was walking up on. It didn’t matter my soul was being laid wide open as my brain attempted to understand what was happening. Some how in those moments I knew Jesus was still sovereign in our universe. Here, I was reminded to be very careful of my words, beliefs, and actions about what I (we) were about to experience. It was this powerful force and reminder of how thankful I am that I know the Lord.

My brain teleported back to 10/27/2005 to another hospital room where the Lord had led me to Genesus 50:20-21, this time it was 21 where I was reminded my children would be ok. Somehow, I knew in my soul that everything would be okay regardless of what was occurring. He gave me peace in this instant and in the many seconds, hours, days, months, and years ahead, as no one else could have.

But still, through utter brokenness, where somehow we found beauty like we never could have in any other way

Tonight, 20 years ago @ 11 pm, we found ourselves in the first ER….. it was here where I prayed, asking the Lord to give me something so that even though it felt like in the natural realm of things there was nothing I could do to fix what was going on before my very eyes, what was being heard with my ears and felt in my bones….. and the profound shift that occurred in the inner depths of my soul… This thing was ultimately beyond my human control… The doctors were saying something unfathomable to me in my natural mind. I couldn't comprehend... That’s when I knew there was serious activity beyond the natural that was occurring in the supernatural. In this instance, my mind flashed back to all the ways the Lord had prepared me over the few months before this event unfolded before my eyes… playing out like a horror story. It was in these moments that I realized the Lord had been preparing me to be strong, courageous, graceful, and solid as a rock in this very moment, as this doctor began to rattle off what seemed like a “death of life” sentence to me. It was here that the Lord gave me three instructions for something I could do because, as the doctor's voices attempted to pierce my soul, I stood still looking at them in the middle of an ER. As they talked, I quietly shut out their voices in my head and asked the Lord to give me the tools to fight this in ways beyond human possibility. All three of these instructions needed to occur in the supernatural realm because what was going on in the natural realm was a fight between the two realms, as I’d never experienced before in my entire life.

I still do these three things today: “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer” (Ro 12:12, ESV). Rejoice! Patience! Pray!

I broke after non-sleep for over 24 hours. My mind was delusional, and my heart was broken into a million pieces and the core of the deepest parts of my soul was shattered. Bill Hutchinson walked in on me, curled up on a chair outside the ER in the waiting room. I never lose my 💩 as I did…. My reactions scared him… And if I ever do it’s because something or someone has pushed me to the edge of the cliff… He rushed to the double ER doors and began to bang on them, yelling, " Let me in. Let me the F in - in his Ranger warrior style. It took a whole hell of a lot to bring me to the state I was in… seeing me in this state made him think he had died…. We both ran down the ER corridor. Bill pushed everyone out of the way, climbed on the hospital bed, and got on top of him, demanding the evil infirmary get out of him. It was intense. He looked up and said, Daddy, I want to go home!!! 😭😭😭

It was another seven days, and during this time, Bill and I were both police escorted out of the facility holding him hostage; as we demanded, they would not let him go. Bill said choice words and left the room, and I told the doctor she needed to find another profession if she was afraid. We were 14 hours away from home, and we were not leaving without him. A call from our daughter, Brandi Shook, prompted them to release him to us, albeit against medical protocol.

For the next year and a half we fought systems, people, and forces no parent should ever have to fight in our relentless search for help…

Some may ask why we want to remember this day. Well, days like this remind us of it all, which helps us see the good in such horrific experiences. It reminds us of the progress made and how far we have come. I knew in these first moments as our feet led us through the doors of the first ER that the Lord was always there, regardless of what we saw, heard, or felt. It was at the ER door that I grabbed his cheeks and spoke for the first time. “If it is a sickness, you are already healed. If it is oppression, you’ve already been delivered. Whatever this is- boy, you have one hell of a testimony”.
I can't wait to hear it…. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Earlier, the police officer encouraged us to go to the newer, smaller hospital, even though it was farther away. Little did we know Jesus was waiting on us there…

Over the ER reception desk, read “As Jesus takes care of you, so will we.” It was a Christian hospital. 💖🙏🏽😇 It was the Lord's way of saying hold on, all is going to be ok.

I'm taking the opportunity today to tell those struggling with whatever—it’s going to be okay!

This angel reminds me of the Archangel Michael, the great captain, the leader of the heavenly hosts, and the warrior helping the children of Israel. I will fight to my last dying breath…
The angel is like….. GET OUT! Lol

This picture was taken the day after. This was the absolute worst and hardest day of our marriage and our lives. We were numb. We were still in shock.

I am grateful we all survived. We are all still surviving one day at a time & some days one moment at a time.

If you ever see me break, it will be because someone interfered with my mission to accomplish what the Lord called me to do on this day, 20 years ago. I do not have an option to let Him down.

Moments like these…

There comes a moment when you realize that healing isn't about collecting more information.

It's about changing the direction of your life.

At Turning Tides with Dr. Hutch, we believe every person has a story worth understanding—not just a list of symptoms to manage.

Psychiatry Reimagined™ is one part of that story. It's our vision for transforming the way we understand brain and mental health by looking beyond symptoms to the underlying drivers that influence how we think, feel, and function.

But it's only one part.

Turning Tides is about whole-person health.

🌊 We ask why before what.

🧬 We use advanced functional and precision medicine to uncover hidden imbalances.

🩺 We personalize care because no two people are created the same.

🧠 We support brain health, gut health, hormones, metabolism, inflammation, detoxification, and longevity.

🙏 And we never lose sight of faith, hope, purpose, and the incredible healing capacity God designed within the human body.

Our goal has never been to simply help someone feel better for a few days.

Our goal is to help change the trajectory of their health—for years to come.

Because lasting transformation rarely happens in a single appointment.

It happens through education, partnership, personalized care, and walking alongside one another—one step, one decision, one victory at a time.

This is more than a practice.

This is more than a visit.

This is Turning Tides with Dr. Hutch—where science, compassion, and hope come together to help people reclaim their health and rewrite their story.

"Where life-giving water meets healing, and hearts begin to beat again." 🌊💙

Today I had the privilege of speaking during Brain Health & Peak Performance Day about something that has become much more than my profession—it has always been my calling, since day 1. So, when I was asked yesterday to participate in the Brain Health Day, I couldn't refuse the opportunity. What I thought was going to be an interview turned out to be just me, LOL... I HOPE you enjoy:)... TIME: 3:50:11

Years ago, I became convinced that we were asking the wrong question.

Instead of asking,

"What's wrong with this person?"

I began asking,

"What happened to this brain, and what does it need to heal?"

That question became the foundation for Psychiatry Reimagined™.
I believe the brain is much like an orchestra. When inflammation is high, sleep is disrupted, nutrients are depleted, hormones are imbalanced, or the gut is unhealthy, the orchestra begins to play out of tune. Rather than silencing the music, we should ask which instruments need attention so we can restore harmony.

Psychiatry Reimagined™ recognizes that brain health isn't determined by one thing. It's shaped by the interaction of biology, inflammation, nutrition, gut health, mitochondrial function, hormones, genetics, trauma, relationships, purpose, lifestyle, and spiritual well-being.

To me, Psychiatry Reimagined™ is more than a new way of approaching mental health. It's a new way of understanding the human brain.

During the interview, I was unexpectedly asked what HOPE means to me. I didn't quite catch the question in the moment, but afterward I realized that HOPE has always been at the heart of this work.

H.O.P.E.

H — Hear the Story
Every healing journey begins by understanding a person's history, trauma, environment, relationships, purpose, and lived experience.

Restore the biology that supports a healthy brain through nutrition, sleep, movement, gut health, hormones, mitochondrial function, inflammation, detoxification, and nervous system regulation.

P — Personalize the Path
Use functional and precision medicine, advanced laboratory testing, nutrigenomics, and individualized care to uncover each person's unique underlying contributors.

E — Empower Lifelong Flourishing
Equip people with the knowledge, tools, faith, and confidence to build resilience, restore hope, and flourish—not merely survive.

If you'd like to watch the presentation, my segment begins at 3:50:11 in the Brain Health & Peak Performance Day livestream.

Hi, I am creating a long-overdue academy to house courses. I'd like to get opinions on which logo you all like best. I have a favorite, and some I think are probably way too busy. I have placed a reference # in the top left corner, so be sure to list your favorite in the comments. If you like more than one, please list the in order, with your absolute favorite as the first.

My beautiful and talented friend Christine Hathaway created Sozo design about 20 years ago for another purpose, and today I am using her recreated design to represent an online academy to share all of the wonderful knowledge and wisdom I've gained over the past 20 years. Christine is an amazing artist, and I am incredibly grateful to her for what she has done for me and for always supporting my life's purpose. Just to be clear, these are AI-generated from her original design.

If you’ve not scheduled your Thermagraphy experience knows a great time to do it. June comes in to Turning Tides with Dr. Hutch once a month. Give her a call and schedule yours today.

I appreciate this perspective because thyroid health is about far more than a single lab value.

From a functional medicine standpoint, we ask why the thyroid may be struggling in the first place. While thermography does not diagnose thyroid disease or replace ultrasound or laboratory testing, it can offer another piece of the puzzle by providing information about thyroid physiology and patterns of inflammation.

At Turning Tides with Dr. Hutch, we believe no single test tells the whole story. We integrate a patient’s symptoms, comprehensive thyroid labs (including antibodies when appropriate), nutritional status (iodine, selenium, zinc, iron, vitamin D, and others), gut health, stress physiology, environmental exposures, and imaging when indicated. Thermography can be one valuable tool that complements this comprehensive approach.

Healing begins when we stop asking, “What diagnosis fits this person?” and start asking, “What is this person’s body trying to tell us?“

“I love thinking of thermography as another clue—not the entire answer. Functional medicine is about putting all of the pieces together so we can better understand why someone isn’t feeling well, rather than relying on a single test or symptom.”

We are focusing on the Thyroid - Thermography offers a non-invasive, non-radiologic measurement of thyroid physiology. As such it will not detect nodules or tumors but will provide a representation of physiologic dysfunction which when coupled with history, physical examination and lab tests will provide a far greater picture of the thyroid function.

What if healing wasn't about chasing symptoms?

What if it was about understanding your story?

At Turning Tides, we believe that true healing happens when we stop looking at the body in pieces and begin seeing the whole person.

✨ Lifestyle Medicine helps build the foundation through nutrition, movement, sleep, relationships, purpose, faith, and daily habits.

🔍 Functional Medicine asks deeper questions and investigates the root causes behind symptoms.

🧬 Precision Medicine recognizes that no two people are the same and personalizes care based on your unique biology.

🧠 Functional Psychiatry explores the powerful connection between the brain, body, gut, hormones, inflammation, trauma, lifestyle, and overall well-being.

But at the center of it all is YOU.

Your body.
Your brain.
Your story.
Your purpose.

Because healing isn't about finding a quick fix. It's about creating a personalized path that honors who you are and addresses what matters most.

At Turning Tides, we bring together faith, science, lifestyle, and personalized care to help you uncover the "why" behind your symptoms and move toward lasting transformation.

💜 One Person. One Story. One Personalized Path.

🌿💜 The Gift of Breath 💜🌿

Ahhhhh… how sweet it is when done properly.

Today, I invite you to pause and center yourself in the breath of Yah·weh.

Take a deep breath in…

Yahhhhhhhhh…

Hold.

Then slowly release…

…wehhhhhhhh.

But today, I don’t want to focus on the first breath or even the last breath.

I want to focus on the dash.

That sacred space in between.

Because the dash is more than the pause between the inhale and the exhale.

The dash is life itself.

From our first breath to our last breath, we are given a dash.

And what we do during that dash matters.

☀️ Soak in the sunshine.

🚶 Move your body.

🥗 Nourish yourself well.

🙏 Draw near to God.

❤️ Love deeply.

😄 Laugh often.

🤝 Serve others.

✨ Live with purpose.

🌊 Find peace.

Because a beautiful life is not measured by the first breath or the last breath…

It is measured by how we live in between.

So today…

Be grateful for the first breath.

Live the dash well.

And when the time comes, embrace the beauty of the last breath as the completion of a life well lived.

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” — Psalm 150:6

💜 Breathe in Yah·weh.
🌿 Live the Dash.
☀️ Embrace a Life Well Lived.

Only do the things that make YOU happy, healthy, and strong…. You only have one moment, one day, one year, one life…. Live it well ✌🏽💖☀️🌸
