Joy Bennington
Joy Bennington, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, educator, musician, caregiver, and woman of faith, passed away on July 20, 2026. Joy brought compassion, encouragement, music, and an unforgettable smile to her family, students, church communities, and everyone fortunate enough to know her.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 5, at 1:30 p.m. at Freedom Village in Bradenton, Florida.
Joy was born September 18, 1939, in Clarkston, Michigan, to Ed and Virginia Owen. Joy grew up with her younger sister, Diana, in Auburn Heights, east of Pontiac, and attended Avondale High School. She excelled in school and music, revealing two qualities that would define her life: a love of music and a desire to help others.
During her senior class trip in 1957, Joy met Jim Bennington, beginning a relationship that would last 69 years. They attended the University of Michigan, where Joy initially planned to study medicine. After a difficult semester of chemistry, she transferred to the School of Education. Inspired by her mother, one of Michigan’s early special education teachers, Joy chose a career educating and supporting children with special needs.
At Michigan, Joy joined Alpha Xi Delta sorority, and she and Jim formed lifelong friendships. They married between semesters during Joy’s senior year. After Jim completed his engineering degree and accepted a position with Chevrolet Engineering, they moved to Warren, Michigan.
Their three daughters—Martha, Meridith, and Anne—were born during their years in Warren and Shelby Township. Joy studied at Oakland University, earning a master’s degree in education with a specialization in special education. When her mother retired, Joy followed directly in her footsteps, taking over her classroom at Stone School in Auburn Heights.
In the early 1970s, the family moved to Ann Arbor when Jim entered a consulting business with friends and University of Michigan professors. Joy began teaching special education at Ypsilanti High School and later earned a Specialist degree from Eastern Michigan University. During approximately 23 years there, she served as department chair, overseeing a program serving about 260 students with 16 teachers.
Joy was a gifted, compassionate educator who believed every child deserved encouragement, dignity, and an opportunity to succeed. Her work was more than a profession; it expressed her lifelong commitment to people who needed understanding and support.
The Ann Arbor years were filled with family, friendships, entertaining, music, and Michigan sports. While teaching and raising three daughters, Joy developed her passion for food, cooking, and hospitality. Her mother, a home economics teacher, inspired her love of preparing and serving good food. Family and friends considered Joy the standard by which they measured their culinary skills. She could taste a dish, identify its ingredients, and explain exactly what it needed.
After retiring from teaching in the late 1990s, Joy stayed active. Jim retired in 1999, and they built a log home near Hale, Michigan. Pinesong Lodge became the site of “Pinesong Camp,” where their grandchildren created treasured summer memories.
Joy had a lifelong connection to the water, from childhood summers at Tipsico Lake to 14 years of family sailing adventures on three sailboats. She loved sailing, although she strongly preferred that the boat remain upright.
Retirement also brought travel, including European river cruises and trips throughout the Caribbean, Hawaii, and the Great Lakes.
In 1997, Joy and her mother purchased a home on Lake La Vista in Anna Maria, Florida. Florida became central to Joy and Jim’s retirement and connected them with Roser Community Church. Joy served as a deacon, spent nearly 26 years as the choir librarian, and became a Stephen Minister and certified Stephen Ministry leader. Eventually, Joy and Jim sold their Michigan property and made Florida their permanent home.
Music was woven throughout Joy’s life. She sang with the Sweet Adelines in Ann Arbor and participated in two national competitions. In Hale, she rang handbells at the local Methodist church. In Florida, she sang with the Roser Choir, Anna Maria Island Chorus and Orchestra, and Musica Sacra. A highlight was singing at England’s Lichfield Cathedral. Although two artificial shoulders ended her handbell ringing, her love of music never diminished.
Joy devoted approximately 25 years to Stephen Ministry, offering one-on-one Christian care to people facing illness, grief, loneliness, and other hardships. She listened without judgment, comforted without seeking recognition, and brought hope during painful times. Music and ministering to others became defining themes of her life.
In 2020, Joy suffered a life-threatening aortic emergency and was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital for approximately 12 hours of surgery. Despite small odds of survival, she made a remarkable recovery, which her family regarded as angelic protection.
Recognizing that they should no longer live alone, Joy and Jim moved to Freedom Village of Bradenton in 2021, joining Joy’s sister, Diana. Joy became an active and beloved resident. She joined the Freedom Village Singers and continued visiting and comforting people facing serious or life-ending illnesses. Whether singing, sitting quietly with someone in need, or greeting a neighbor, Joy brought kindness and reassurance.
Those who knew Joy will remember her smile, especially when she was singing. It expressed her joy in music, faith, friendship, family, and service, and made others feel welcomed and valued.
Joy is survived by Jim, her husband of 65 years; daughters Martha and her husband, Steve, Meridith Anne, and Anne Elizabeth Helber and her husband, Bob; grandchildren Sam Bennington, Celia Hohns and her husband, Charles, Ben Helber and his wife, Yetta, Garrette Helber and his fiancée, Lindsey, Isabel Brandt, Thomas Brandt, and Andrew Brandt; and great-grandchildren Sophia and Harper Hohns, and Maximilian and Azalea Helber.
She is also survived by her sister, Diana Owen; brother-in-law Jerry Bennington and his wife, Barbara; and sister-in-law Carol Bennington.
Joy will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother, gifted educator, compassionate minister, accomplished cook and hostess, joyful singer, and woman of deep faith. Most of all, she will be remembered for her generous heart and unforgettable smile.
