Why should distance runners sprint?
Sprinting isn't just for sprinters.
When appropriately incorporated into a distance runner's training, sprinting exposes the body to qualities that slower running simply can't replicate.
Neuromuscular Coordination & Power: Sprinting requires the nervous system to coordinate rapid, high-force movements, teaching you to apply force efficiently into the ground.
Rate of Force Development: It's not just about how much force you can produce, but how quickly you can produce it. Sprinting trains the ability to turn raw strength into explosive propulsion.
Reactive Strength: Every stride uses the stretch-shortening cycle. Sprinting challenges the ability to rapidly absorb force and reuse it for the next stride.
Tendon Capacity: When progressed appropriately, high-speed running can expose tendons to the rapid loading they were designed to handle.
Range of Motion: Sprinting naturally requires movement through greater ranges of motion than easy running, challenging mobility dynamically rather than passively.
Muscle Fiber Recruitment: Higher-intensity running recruits larger, faster muscle fibers that aren't challenged to the same degree during easy aerobic running.
You don't need to become a sprinter.vBut including occasional, appropriately dosed speed work may help you become a more complete runner.
