The Magic Words: 'Systemic Condition'"

🩺 Here's the piece of the puzzle most people never hear about: systemic conditions.

Medicare and many insurers will cover routine-sounding foot care (like nail trimming) when it's tied to a systemic or functional condition that puts your feet at risk for an infection or amputation think:

*Diabetes with peripheral neuropathy (Feels like feet is in socks all the time, sharp shooting pain, burning sensation, tingling)

*Poor circulation (Blue feet, Rubra/Purplish feet when they dangle, pale feet when elevated, Raynaud's Disease, Lymphedema, Phlebitis/thrombophlebitis, Buerger's Disease, Atherosclerosis of extremities with or without gangrene)

*Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) (Think pain when walking, cold feet)

*Chronic venous insufficiency (skin color changes to lower legs, swelling, engorged veins, varicose veins)

Certain autoimmune or neurological conditions (Lupus, Liver disease, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, Leprosy, Late/tertiary Neurosyphilis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Kidney Disease, Amyloidosis, B12 Vitamin Deficiency, Malabsorption syndromes-Celiac, Sprue, post surgical )

*Paraplegia, Quadriplegia,

*Use of an assistive device to walk (Walker, Wheelchair, assist of 1 person) if used alongside mycotic nail codes (b35.1, L60.2, L60.3)

Why does this matter? Because for someone with these conditions, an overlooked ingrown or overgrown nail isn't cosmetic it can lead to a wound, an infection, or worse. That's why coverage exists: to protect people who are genuinely at higher risk.

If you fall into one of these categories, that's often the difference between "not covered" and "covered as medically necessary."

Is your head spinning yet? If so, join the club because that's how I feel when billing insurances. If I do not put all the required codes with modifiers in place, I am in trouble.

👣 Let's clear up one of the most common questions we get: "Does my insurance cover foot care?"

The honest answer is: it depends!

Routine foot care (trimming nails, calluses, corns) is usually considered "maintenance" care and isn't automatically covered by Medicare or most commercial insurance plans.

BUT, if you have certain underlying health conditions that make foot care medically necessary, coverage rules does a complete 180 degrees.

Over the next few posts, I'll break down:
✅ What conditions can qualify you for covered foot care
✅ How often visits can be covered
✅ What documentation makes the difference
✅ How payment works whether you're an insurance patient or a self-pay patient

Follow along, by the end of this mini foot series, you'll be able to walk into your next appointment with confidence about what to expect. 💙
