September 4th is National Wildlife Day and was created in honor of, and later in memory of, wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin. The global awareness day brings education to the public concerning the number of endangered animals and the need for conservation and preservation. A healthy wildlife population is important for so many reasons, for the over-all wellness of the globe and for humans to thrive.
Ecosystem Balance:
Food webs: Predators and prey depend on each other so one species does not take over.
Pollination: Bees, birds, and bats help flowers and food crops grow.
Waste clean-up: Scavengers clean up dead matter to stop diseases from spreading.
Benefits for Humans
Food security: Diverse nature supports strong farms and healthy fisheries.
Clean water and air: Healthy forests and animals filter our air and keep water safe.
Climate control: Thriving forests with wild animals store carbon dioxide to slow down climate change

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. While arthritic change is a common part of aging, having to deal with debilitiating pain doesn't have to be. With animals that are getting older or breeds that are predisposed to joint issues, we recommend getting them on a joint supplement and/or an EFA supplement, ideally both. Many times pets don't show obvious signs of discomfort until things progress enough, and a lot of times the symptoms can be subtle enough that the owners don't realize the pet was uncomfortable until something is used to help relieve pain and lubricate the joints. It is never too early to start a joint supplement, but nothing will reverse the changes that age brings. Once your pet has progressed past where just the supplements can help, we discuss adding on a pet-safe NSAID or other joint support medications to help improve your pet's quality of life. Keeping pets at a healthy weight, and keeping them active to keep their muscles strong are other ways to help manage arthritic changes.

September 1st is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! About 80% of orange cats are male because the gene for orange fur is sex-linked on the X chromosome. A male cat only needs one copy of this gene to be fully orange, where females need 2 copies of the gene to be orange. Science says that orange cats don't have any increased chances of disease vs non-orange cats, but many people working at a vet clinic would say that urinary issues (to include infections and blockages) and being overweight with a tendency towards diabetes is seen more in cats with this coat color. We want to see your ginger cats!

August 28th is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day. For many people, their household animals aren't JUST pets. They are family members, or connections to people who are no longer with them, or their only source of comfort and support, or their only reason for getting up in the mornings. And while people generally mourn for the loss of their pets, for some people it hits them harder and is devastating and debilitating. There are resources that can help people to process their pain and grief after losing a pet, from online support groups to in-person resources.

August 26th is International Dog Day! We recommend that all dogs be current on their rabies and Parvo vaccines, and be on year round heartworm and flea/tick prevention. Beyond that, recommendations are based on the pet's lifestyle. Besides wellness services, we most commonly see pets for skin and ear issues/allergies, eye issues, urinary tract infections, and limping/lameness, among other issues. We want to see pictures of your canine companions!

August 23rd is International Blind Dog Day. There are many reasons that a dog can have vision issues. Dogs can lose their vision due to genetics, accidents, or underlying diseases. Common medical reasons include uncontrolled diabetes, cataracts, glaucoma, SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome), and PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy). Whether your pet came to you blind or developed vision deficits later on, they can adapt and cope with time and patience.

The right enrichment tools for your cat can help reduce aggression and destruction that may cause you to consider declawing your cat. Placing acceptable items near where your cat is scratching, and using an attractant like cat nip can help redirect them to stop destroying your furniture and target what you want them to go after. if your cat is using their claws when being played with, stop using your hands directly to play with your cat and use toys instead. When your pet gets too hand-sy with you, stop playing with them- they will learn that if they use claws, they stop being interacted with. Cats can be trained just like dogs can, but people don't necessarily think about it.
The 4 Main Reasons Cats Scratch:
Muscle Stretching: Scratching provides a full-body workout. Reaching high up and extending their claws stretches their back muscles, spine, and paws.
Claw Maintenance: Cat claws grow in layers. Scratching against textured surfaces pulls off the old, dead outer husks, keeping the nails sharp and healthy.
Territory Marking: Cats have specialized scent glands in their paw pads. Scratching deposits a unique chemical scent on objects while simultaneously leaving a visual mark for communication.
Stress Relief: Scratching releases feel-good hormones in the brain, helping cats cope with anxiety or excess energy.

Because scratching is a vital, hardwired need, the goal is to redirect it away from your furniture rather than stop it entirely:
Provide Excellent Options: Give them a sturdy, tall scratching post or a cat tree that allows them to fully stretch.
Match Textures: Cats have preferences for different materials like sisal, cardboard, or carpet. Try different types to see what your cat likes best.
Strategic Placement: Put the scratching posts in high-traffic areas or near their favorite lounging spots

Cats are considered to be the most common pet in US households, and they do need routine vet care, but they go to the vet less often than dogs. A lot of that is because cats are so good at hiding sickness (and hiding in general once that carrier comes out), but it also stresses some owners out just to think about taking their cat to the vet. At the very least, cats are legally required to have a rabies vaccine in Kentucky and Indiana, even if they are indoor only. There are many cases of rabid bats getting into houses and so even indoor only animals are at risk. There are medications to pre-treat your cat with prior to vet visits to reduce stress levels, and desensitizing your cat to the carrier means the carrier isn't so scary and can actually provide a level of security to your cat.
