Mr. Ernest Clifford “Ernie” Lawson, age 81, passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2026, in Ekron, KY. Ernie was born on December 5, 1944, the son of Clifford and Ima Jean (Wilson) Lawson.
Ernie grew up a determined child, waiting patiently with his best friend, Bill, by early morning train tracks for the opportunity to caddy at the Audubon Country Club. Back then, the wages he earned would be enough to delight any young boy, but Ernie also found wealth in learning from those around him. It was during this time that he learned to play Chess. Quite talented, Ernie favored the tactical nature of the game. It would come no shock when years later Ernie proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during Vietnam. Having made Airman of the Year, Ernie flew on the T-38 Talon, which is a super sonic trainer aircraft and was a crew chief on the F-4 Phantom. He carried great pride in his military service throughout his life. Following his time in the Air Force, he built a career of more than 30 years as a Photoengraver-Graphic Artist, working for Standard Gravure in Louisville, KY, and later for Quebecor in San Jose, CA, where he was respected for his dedication and craftsmanship. He had a passion for traveling and enjoyed seeing new places with the people he loved. One of his most endearing qualities was his love for dogs. He could often be found watching Disney movies, cheering on the University of Louisville Cardinals, or spending time outdoors fishing, or caring for his beautiful lawn…especially if it meant getting to ride his beloved lawn mower. Even now, Ernie’s lawn continues to be cared for by his compassionate neighbors, Mike and Sylvia as well as Rosco, Audrey, and their daughter Charlotte Sue, a reflection of the gentle, kindhearted spirit he shared with everyone around him.
Above all, Ernie was a devoted husband, a loving dad, a cherished papa, and a loyal friend. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was always ready with a smile or joke, and found joy in making others laugh. His warmth, kindness, and ability to make people feel welcome will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy is one of service, love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his friends and family. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Ernie is survived by his loving wife of over 55 years, Lois Jean (Chapman) Lawson; two sons, David Lawson, and Bradley Lawson and his wife, Cara; his daughter, Hollie (Lawson) Logan and her husband, Keith; and five grandchildren, Bryce, Hunter, Skyler, Rylee, and Reese.
A graveside service, with military honors, will be held at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, KY. Hager Funeral Home in Brandenburg has been entrusted with the arrangements.
