Inside The Playroom: Creative Expression Toys
Instead of asking kids to “talk about their feelings” (which can feel impossible or scary), these toys let children show their feelings through action, art, and imagination.
Here’s how they work in play therapy:
Symbolic communication- Children often can’t find the words for what’s going on inside. The play becomes a “language” the therapist can gently translate.
Sense of control- When kids mold clay, choose colors, or create a scene, they’re in charge. That control can feel healing, especially for children who’ve experienced chaos or trauma.
Practice for problem-solving- Building, painting, or crafting allows children to experiment with choices, mistakes, and “redos” in a safe way. It’s rehearsal for coping and flexibility.
Strengthening self-esteem- Completing a drawing or project gives a child something tangible they created—proof they are capable.
