Dry eye can be caused by age, screen time, contacts, allergies, and even certain medications. If you’re noticing redness, burning, or sensitivity to light, it may be time to try something new. There are many ways to treat dryness through medical means, but here are a few good first step recommendations to try at home!

💦LUBRICATING DROPS : We recommend using Systane or Refresh, especially the preservative free variety which can be used as many times a day as you feel is needed. Most patients use these drops 4-6 times daily. A lubricating gel drop is a slightly thicker drop that is good for keeping the eye lubricated for longer, but can cause vision to blur briefly. We have many drops in office. Stop in and we can direct you to the best fit for you!
* We DO NOT recommend using any with the term "Red eye relief" as they are known to dry the eye out more and cause more redness in the long run.

♨️HEATED COMPRESS / DRY EYE MASK: We have a dry eye mask in the office made by OcuSoft which can be purchased for $25.00. It can be heated in the microwave for 20 seconds and worn for 10-15 minutes until it cools down. This mask is used to open up the Meibomian glands, helping your eyes naturally lubricate. (See how it can be used to help allergies below).

🐟FISH OILS/OMEGA 3's : Many cheap fish oils don't have enough or any EPA or DHA which are the main ingredients that promote healthy eyes. The human body needs 2,000mg of omega-3 and most people have under 1,000mg.
We have a one month supply of soft gels in the office that we offer for $37.50. Ours are made to match the natural make up of those found in nature without the extra fishy taste of a lot of the brands out there. More importantly they come with a higher concentration of over 2,000 of combined EPA and DHA than the leading brands.

If none of these recommendations help and your eyes are still uncomfortable please feel free to give the office a call so we can schedule a time to go over other options!

Are your eyes -ready?

Summer is here and you know what that means – time! Whether you’re heading to the mountains, relaxing on the beach, or driving to see friends or family, it’s important that you and your eyes have what it takes to see the world clearly. Before you step out on your next adventure, check out these great do’s and don’ts from the American Academy of Ophthalmology:

Do: Double your pairs and pack your backup glasses
Don’t: Forget your sunglasses!
Do: Prepare for dry eyes on airplanes
Don’t: Use water to clean your contacts
Do: Stock up on prescription eye drops
Don’t: Ignore changes in your vision, even on vacation
Do: Enjoy your adventure.
Most importantly if you do experience an eye emergency while traveling, find an eye doctor near you. Some eye conditions can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated appropriately. Don’t wait!

Did you know that more than 24 million Americans over the age of 40 are diagnosed with cataracts? The National Eye Institute also states that by age 75, approximately half of all Americans will have cataracts. No matter how well we care for our eyes, the development of cataracts is often inevitable. However, with regular eye exams and attention to our vision health, cataracts can be detected early with the possibility of treatment. If you notice any of the following eye symptoms, make sure to bring them up at your next exam:

ďťż

Your vision appears cloudy, blurry, or dim.
Doing activities at night becomes much more difficult.
Your eye’s lens appears darker with a hint of yellow or brown.
Eyes become extremely sensitive to light.
Halo-like rings that surround a light source.
Eyesight worsens rapidly and your prescription changes frequently.
The yellow or brownish clumps of protein in your lens give everything a yellowish tint.
Clouding of your eye causes double vision or diplopia.
ďťż

We are scheduling in to the new year! Make sure you schedule your next exam soon so you don’t let cataracts dim your light.
