Rest in peace, THE guru of play therapy. If you are a Play Therapist, it is likely that this man taught you 90% of what you know and do. We are profoundly grateful for his existence, and the way he changed the entire world with his love, and masterfully beautiful understanding of children 🩵 his life and purpose will leave an echo for years and years to come. ⭐️Starting Child-Centered Play Therapy⭐️...can feel a little different than what many caregivers expect.

⭐️Children are not asked to sit down and explain their feelings like adults. They are not expected to “perform” in the playroom or talk about everything after the session.

⭐️Instead, they are given space to communicate in the way that comes most naturally to them: play.

⭐️The first few sessions are often about safety, trust, and relationship. Your child may explore quietly, move from toy to toy, repeat the same play, test limits, or play in ways that seem simple on the outside. None of this is wasted time. It is part of how the therapeutic relationship begins to form.

⭐️In Child-Centered Play Therapy, the child leads and the therapist follows with warmth, reflection, attunement, and safe limits when needed. The goal is not to direct the child toward what we think they should process, but to create a space where their inner world can unfold at their pace.

⭐️Progress may be subtle at first. Sometimes growth begins with a child feeling safer, more expressive, more regulated, more confident, or more able to tolerate frustration.

⭐️Caregivers are still an important part of the process, too. Parent consultations help us think together about themes, emotional development, and what your child may be communicating through their play.
