TMD can be such a nuisance! Talking, eating, yawning, sleeping, waking....all painful. We've all seen the toll it can take on a patient.
👊Dry needling is such a powerful tool for patients with TMD. With even just 2 muscles (temporalis and masseter) you can make a HUGE change for these folks. Add in other muscles that can contribute mechanically: the suboccipitals, upper cervical multifidus and erectors, SCM, pecs, medial and lateral pterygoids and you've got yourself some MAGIC.🪄
This study specifically looks at immediate effects of dry needling - and no surprise, it works. Unfortunately the authors did not provide specifics on technique (other than "deep dry needling", or dosing, but we are grateful for more evidence of dry needling's usefulness!

✨Specificity improves outcomes. But how do you know you are in the right muscle?

⚡️Using e-stim to confirm the location of your needle is a game changer. But what if you feel the motor response where the needle is, but don't see movement of the limb? Are you in the right place?

This is a common occurrence when treating FHL. A great trick to verify placement was developed by DNA's own, Keri Maywhort . After identifying the location of the belly of FHL and applying enough intensity of e-stim to get a motor response, put a gentle passive stretch on the muscle. When you let go- MAGIC! 🪄 You will see that big piggy bouncing its happy little way home.

↘⬇↙⬅Redirecting! So important for refining needle placement or safely finding deeper structures. But if you don't do it right, you aren't doing it at all. 🧐

To actually change your needle angle, you must bring the needle out to the dermal layer. If you don't, you are simply advancing a bending needle back into the same location. Uncomfortable and ineffective.😣

We spend the time to teach these little things because they are important for achieving those rock-star 🤩outcomes you've been promised with dry needling.

Technical accuracy....it's in our DNA.

🫶Thank you to the Bone and Joint Institute in Hartford, CT for hosting Foundations in Dry Needling last weekend! Our time with this amazing group of clinicians, was full of illuminating discussion, clinical reasoning, professional growth and thought provoking questions and lots of table time. We had some good laughs, good story telling and some amazing physical changes (Clinicians are patients too!).
