Alfred F. Schroeder
Alfred “Al” Frank Schroeder, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Bremen, Indiana, on August 20, 2026—his 90th birthday. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Martha, and his loyal pups, Gabe and Lollipop. A service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bremen, Indiana, on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
Al was born in Oakland, California, in 1936 and grew up in Belleville, Illinois. He graduated from Millikin University in 1958, where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity and played tennis—a sport that remained a lifelong passion. As the son of a minister, Al’s faith was a constant throughout his life, and he found a church home in nearly every city where he lived.
Al enjoyed a long and successful career in sales. He began his career with Purina in St. Louis, Missouri, where he helped introduce Purina Puppy Chow to the market. After several moves throughout the Midwest, he settled in the New York metropolitan area and built a career as a food broker, representing well-known brands including Duraflame, Chicken of the Sea, and Cadbury candy.
Al lived for many decades in Wyckoff & Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, where he help raise his family and enjoyed summers playing tennis and winters playing paddle tennis at Indian Trail Club. He continued to share his love of tennis with his grandson Paul, also an avid player. After his knees could no longer keep up with the game, Al spent his retirement years in Sedona, Arizona, golfing and attending church. A lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, Al proudly embraced red as his favorite color.
It was in Sedona that Al met Martha, his perfect match. They were married on August 20, 2015, and shared 11 years of companionship, faith, and love.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Alfred Schroeder and Ruth Pearn Schroeder, and his sister, Barbara Schneider. He is survived by his wife, Martha Heuberger of Bremen, Indiana; his daughter Amy Lynn Ficon and her husband, Kenneth, of Hawthorne, New Jersey; his daughter Elizabeth Jane Talmont and her husband, Gregory, of Westfield, New Jersey; his son Thomas Schroeder and his wife, Amy, of Yukon, Oklahoma; and his stepson Andy Heuberger and his wife, Theresa. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Katelin “Katie” Ficon, Julia Ficon, Lauren Ficon, Lily Talmont, Lucie Talmont, Ella Schroeder, Paul Schroeder, and Lydia Heuberger Turner, great grandsons Joel and Seth. Al is also survived by brother John Schroeder and his wife, Kathy; his brother-in-law Bob Schneider; his nephew Rick Schroeder; and his nieces Jill Ariola, Ruth Hopkins, and Gayle Loving See less
