Preparing for my future Netflix documentary where I finally answer the question every music therapist gets at every social gathering: “So
what does my favorite song tell you about me? Is there something wrong? 😂”

First of all
no. Your musical preferences are not a diagnosis or a value judgment.

Music can absolutely reveal parts of our story, our values, our memories, and even our desires. And while I have extensive training in recognizing what certain musical elements or lyrical themes might suggest, I’m far less interested in what I think your favorite song means than what YOU think it means. 😉

Today’s Wait
That Song Said THAT? is Prince’s 1984 hit “Let’s Go Crazy.” And it gets deep.

This song is so much more than an iconic party anthem. It’s an existential pop hit that Prince used to express his spiritual beliefs and the idea that faith could lift him above fear and evil (yes, “de-elevator”).

Instead of writing an overtly religious song, he wove those themes into a mainstream hit. It was his way of sharing what mattered most to him while reaching a wider audience. The Purple Rain album that this track is on also became part of a much larger conversation about artistic expression and censorship.

Once you know the meaning behind the song, the lyrics and even the musical choices hit completely differently. 💜

I was actually sweating while recording this. 😅

I’m not exactly sure what this series is going to become, but thanks to my sweet friend Bradi O'Rourke, I decided to stop waiting until I had it all figured out and just start. We always have the best behind-the-business conversations, and she encouraged me to share what it’s really like to build a brand.

Showing up like this doesn’t come naturally to me. But my mission has always been to help people feel more connected to themselves, trust themselves, and feel safe using their voice. And the truth is, I have to keep doing that work too.

There are a lot of highs, a lot of doubts, and a lot of moments where I come face-to-face with the belief that maybe I’m not enough. Not enough to have a seat at bigger tables. Not enough for anyone to care about my ideas or perspectives. But every time I meet one of those edges instead of avoiding it, I face it head-on and I inevitably grow.

And if I’m feeling this, I have a feeling I’m not the only one. I know there are other music therapists, creative arts therapists, founders, and creatives wondering if they’re allowed to dream bigger too.

So here are my unfiltered thoughts. The wins, the awkward moments, the lessons, the pivots, the asks, and everything in between.

Thanks for listening! 💚

As much as I love talking about the healing power of music, music therapy isn’t just about the music.

It’s about the relationship between two people. It’s about creating a space where someone feels safe enough to take a deep breath, try something new or scary, ask for what they need, and connect to something deeper within themselves.

Being trusted with these moments is something I will never take for granted. 💚

Someone asked me this question recently, “Which type of music is better for you
instrumental or lyric-filled?”

As with many questions about music psychology and music therapy, I gave them my favorite response: “It depends.”

Today’s Wait
That Song Said THAT? is a throwback to the 1999 hit “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” by Eiffel 65. It recently found its way back into pop culture thanks to Bebe Rexha and David Guetta’s “I’m Good (Blue).” 💙

Side note: Did anybody else have the Eiffel 65 Europop CD? Or was it just my family? We had a full-on club in the Honda Odyssey every morning on the way to school. đŸȘ©âœš

“Blue (Da Ba Dee)” became a worldwide hit thanks to its catchy chorus that people could sing along to no matter what language they spoke.

While some people think the song is about depression (the color blue, being alone, no one listening), and others think it’s just a fun nonsense dance track, the band has said it was inspired by the idea that we all experience life through our own unique lens.

The “blue man” represents someone whose entire world is filtered through a single perspective. Everything he sees, feels, and experiences is blue because that’s the reality he knows.

It’s a reminder that no two people experience the world exactly the same way. We all bring our own stories, beliefs, emotions, and experiences to what we see and hear.

Which makes this song a lot more interesting than most of us realized while shouting “I’M BLUE DA BA DEE DA BA DI” from the backseat. 😂

We need to talk about balance.

We’ve been taught that balance means giving everything equal time, energy, and attention. But it just isn’t realistic to make sure every area (e.g. work, relationships, hobbies, health) gets equal attention all the time.

Think about an orchestra. At any given moment, some instruments are carrying the melody while others provide harmony, rhythm, texture, or even silence. They’re all important, but they aren’t all in the spotlight at the same time.

Life works the same way.

Balance isn’t about making everything equal. It’s about intentionally choosing what needs your attention most right now, while trusting that the other parts still matter.

And remember: you have the power to choose what gets prioritized in each season of your life.

Singing is a mind, body, and spirit experience. 💚

When you sing, you engage your brain, nervous system, lungs, heart, emotions, and more
all at the same time!

Research suggests singing can support emotional regulation, self-expression, reduce stress, promote connection and joy, improve attention and memory, and activate pathways associated with calm and wellbeing.

No wonder you feel different after singing your favorite song. đŸŽ€âœš

Today’s Wait
That Song Said THAT? is for all my Swifties out there! đŸ«¶đŸ»

To celebrate Taylor’s single release this month, we’re taking a little detour from our usual programming and looking at some of her most famously misheard lyrics.

Taylor’s catalog is massive, so this time I focused on common misheard lyrics rather than diving into the deeper meaning behind a single song. But if you have a favorite Taylor song you’d like me to analyze, drop it in the comments. You know I love a good lyric and musical deep dive. 😉

Which one shocked you the most? And be honest
how many of these have you been singing wrong all these years? 😂

Today’s Wait
That Song Said THAT? song is “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” by Michael Jackson. đŸȘ©

This was the first song Michael wrote completely on his own and had full creative control over, marking a major transition from family band member to adult solo artist.

Even though it’s one of the ultimate dance songs and I’ve heard it MANY times
how many of you actually knew what it was saying? 😂 I didn’t know the full lyrics until recently.

At first listen (and especially when you read the lyrics), the song can definitely lean on the risqué side. But Michael himself said it could mean whatever you want it to mean. He also described it as being about not quitting and continuing to pursue your dreams.

But with this song, the lyrics aren’t as important as the way they’re delivered. The melody, rhythm, breath, falsetto, groove, and arrangement
that’s what creates the feeling and story. As with most of Michael’s music.

Also, it’s great for getting bodies on the dance floor under a disco ball! đŸ•ș
