The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies was founded in 1985 for professionals to share information about the effects of trauma.

ISTSS is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of knowledge about policy, program and service initiatives that seek to reduce traumatic stressors and their immediate and long-term consequences. ISTSS provides a forum for the sharing of resear

ch, clinical strategies, public policy concerns and theoretical formulations on trauma around the world. We are the premier society for the exchange of professional knowledge and expertise in the field. Members of ISTSS include psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, counselors, researchers, administrators, advocates, journalists, clergy, and others with an interest in the study and treatment of traumatic stress. ISTSS members come from a variety of clinical and non-clinical settings around the world, including public and private health facilities, private practice, universities, non-university research foundations and from many different cultural backgrounds.

New on the ISTSS Trauma Blog: “Beyond Self-Report: Measuring the Psychological Impact of Shame in Veterans with PTSD”

New on the ISTSS Trauma Blog: “Moral Injury and the DSM: Recognizing Moral Dimensions of Trauma”

Authors Seth Mattson, John Peteet, and Shira Maguen explore how experiences involving guilt, shame, betrayal, and moral conflict may not be fully captured by traditional diagnostic frameworks.

These public resources may be helpful for individuals, families, caregivers, aid workers, and providers supporting communities affected by disasters.

ISTSS is pleased to announce Peter Ventevogel, MD, PhD, as the 2026 recipient of the Sarah Haley Memorial Award for Clinical Excellence. This award is given in memory of Sarah Haley, MSW, who served as a psychiatric social worker in the Boston VA, working tirelessly with Vietnam veterans who experienced trauma at a time when traumatic experiences were rarely the focus of treatment.

Dr. Peter Ventevogel trained as psychiatrist at the University of Amsterdam, where he also earned a PhD in medical anthropology with the thesis ‘Borderlands of mental health: Explorations in medical anthropology, psychiatric epidemiology and health systems research in Afghanistan and Burundi”. He has 24 years of experience in developing and implementing programming for mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) for populations affected by violence and displacement. Since 2013, Dr. Ventevogel has been working with the Public Health Section of UNHCR as their Senior Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Specialist. In this role he oversees and provides technical support to UNHCR operations worldwide, including through field support missions to over 35 countries. He has played a pivotal role in fostering interagency consensus and guidance on humanitarian mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies, including through the IASC Reference Group for MHPSS and Sphere Standards. Additionally, he has significantly contributed to clinical tools in global mental health, such as the mhGAP Humanitarian Intervention Guide (Who & UNHCR 20215) and the IASC Minimum Services package for MHPSS. From 2009 to 2013, he served as Editor-in-Chief of Intervention, the Journal of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Conflict Affected Areas. Dr. Ventevogel has been involved in operational research on mental health among refugees and conflict-affected populations, participating in several research consortia focused on scalable psychological interventions. He has (co)authored over 150 academic publications.

ISTSS is pleased to announce Robert H. Pietrzak, PhD, MPH, as the 2026 recipient of the Robert S. Laufer, PhD, Memorial Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement. This award is given in memory of Robert S. Laufer, PhD, a sociologist who made early and important contributions to the field of traumatic stress and PTSD through his research on the effects of war experiences on Vietnam combat veterans.

Dr. Robert Pietrzak is Director of the Translational Psychiatric Epidemiology Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD and Professor of Psychiatry and Public Health at Yale School of Medicine and School of Public Health. His research focuses on psychiatric epidemiology, with particular emphasis on trauma-related disorders, resilience, and mental health in military veterans and other high-risk populations. He has authored more than 700 peer-reviewed publications, cited over 47,000 times, and has served as principal investigator or co-investigator on more than $50 million in extramural research funding. Dr. Pietrzak is widely recognized for his leadership of large-scale, nationally representative longitudinal studies — including the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study — and for advancing the integration of psychosocial, genetic, and neuroimaging approaches to the study of traumatic stress and resilience across the lifespan.

Congratulations to Dr. Pietrzak on this well-deserved honor.
