Patients ask me daily about switching to standing desks due to low back and neck pain from pronged sitting. Standing desks have become even more popular during the past 2 years with an increase of WFH. Even after the transition to standing desks, people still experience low back and neck issues.

The picture on the left depicts most people's standing posture. As you can see, the pelvis is anteriorly tilted and the low back becomes hyperlordotic (extended). This increases pressure into the low back which increases pain over time and as the person becomes more fatigued from standing long hours, the position becomes more exaggerated.

The picture on the left demonstrates a more neutral standing posture with the pelvis neutral and a more natural lumbar lordosis. This more neutral position was achieved after a single session working strengthening and breathing to reset the stressed position. It will take repetition for the body to relearn what normal position should be.

Staying in the same position for prolonged periods of time plays a bigger role in an increase in lower back pain than debating sitting vs standing. The best and most simple solution for working individuals is to take breaks every 45-60min whether you decide to get out of your seat, walk to get a glass of water, take a bathroom break, etc., in order to let your body out of being in a single position for too long.

During my years of being a Chiropractor I have worked in several different clinics. I have always felt I wanted to do more for my patient which was what led me to begin providing Chiropractic services in the environment that best suits you.
