WARREN -

James W. Caton, 84, of Libby Lane, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, at the Rhode Island Veterans Home.

James was preceded in death by the love of his life and devoted wife, Julia Lee (Valante) Caton. Their love was unwavering, and not a day went by that James did not think of her. He faithfully visited Julia's gravesite, tending to her flowers with the same devotion and care that defined their life together.

Born in Marlborough, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Manuel and Olive (Hatch) Caton.

He is survived by his loving children, James W. Caton, Jr. of Warren, Kevin (Kelly) Caton of Bristol, and Kelly (Joe) Brand of Bridgewater, Massachusetts. He was the proud and devoted grandfather of Joshua Caton, Shea Caton, Julia Caton, Jacqueline Caton, Joseph Brand, and Carly Brand.

He is also survived by his siblings, Marion Morgan of Texas, Elinor Thompson of Idaho, Larry Caton of Providence, Janice Whitmore, Merton Caton and Scotty Caton. He was predeceased by his siblings, Manuel "Junior" Caton, Charles "Charlie" Caton, and Patty Standish.

James was a graduate of Warren High School. He was employed by American Tourister for 20 years before beginning a second career with Laidlaw Bus Company, where he worked for more than 20 years until his retirement. James truly loved being a bus driver and took great pride in safely transporting generations of local students. The children on his bus were like family to him, and he genuinely cared about each and every one of them. He looked forward to seeing their smiling faces each day and treasured the friendships he formed with students and their families throughout the years

Anyone who knew James knew of his passion for sports. A lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, and Boston Celtics, game time was sacred in the Caton household. However, nothing brought him more joy than watching his grandchildren compete. Whether it was soccer, track, basketball, baseball, or softball, James had every schedule written down and rarely missed a game. Known lovingly as "Papa Caton," he could always be found cheering from the sidelines and offering encouragement, wisdom, and advice after the final whistle. His grandchildren were truly the center of his world.

James also loved traveling across the country to visit family, especially his sisters in Idaho, Texas, and Arizona. Family meant everything to him, and he cherished every opportunity to spend time with those he loved.

In quieter moments, James enjoyed driving to C**t State Park, finding a peaceful spot overlooking the water, and reading a good book on his Kindle. He appreciated life's simple beauties, never took a day for granted, and lived each day with gratitude.

Above all, James was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He enjoyed life to the fullest, treasured every moment with his family, and left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Bay Church, 645 Main Street, Warren, Rhode Island. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.

BARRINGTON -

Bill Slinko.

Here was a man who would strike up a conversation with anybody.

He was a natural Eagle Scout, belonging to Troop 66. He lived by and often recited Scout Law: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

No surprise, he made friends easily and kept them close and dear.

He loved his wife, Joanne C. (Marshall) Slinko. It was love at first sight, after 41 years of marriage, until his last breath. He loved his dogs, many of them rescues over the years. He was the best dog daddy ever.

He sold his prized Herreshoff 12 ½ foot boat in order to buy a dream car for Joanne. Over the last 22 years he lovingly restored the Porsche 912, recently finishing it in red.

Bill worked at Point Farm for 28 years, wandering in the beauty of nature. He was happiest in the woods, looking at the trees and finding owl pellets to dissect. His collection of skulls from these wanderings included raccoons, coyotes, cows, and assorted birds. These skulls are in his backyard shop: a luminous, cheerful, and well-organized woodshop, with his vast collection of tools, tools, tools.

Renowned for his expertise with all things boat, Bill was an expert sailor, inventive fixes a specialty. A visitor could find him in his driveway, readying Sweet Pea for the water and working on Facey, the crabbing skiff, named for Joanne. Together they loved to row on the Palmer River watching ospreys.

His friends and family will remember with fondness their annual Memorial Day celebration in the backyard, complete with 3 different kinds of homemade beer and delicious food. Sitting under the grape arbor, admiring the unusual garden, everyone making more friends.

William Thomas Aquinas Slinko was born in Providence on November 8, 1961, and lived until April 25, 2026. He passed away after having had a massive and sudden heart attack, at home with Joanne at his side.

As a graduate of Cranston High School West before attending Roger Williams University, he never left the East Bay.

He was the son of the late William F. and Barbara B. (Kiernan) Slinko. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sisters: Mary Elizabeth Slinko of Cranston and Colleen Patricia (Tracy Lyn) Slinko of Goffstown, New Hampshire. He is also survived by his nieces: Shyanne, Paula, and Denise; his nephew Patrick; and his grandnephew, Leo. His brother, Paul Francis Slinko, passed away just five months ago.

He will be deeply missed by all that had the privilege to know him. Sail on, dear Bill.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Monday, May 11, 4 – 7 PM, at the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High Street.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Friends of Bristol Animal Shelter, 10 Minturn Farm Road, Bristol, RI 02809.
