Schools everywhere are back in session. And that means our YWCA NETN and SWVA TechGYRLS are ramping up for a new year of supports, fun, learning, and more! 🥰

Did you know the TechGYRLS have a store in their space? They do! Students earn points for things like turning forms in on time, having good attendance, good grades, showing kindness, being a leader, and more. And once a month, they get to cash in those points at their store, which is stocked exclusively with donations from community members and YWCA board and staff members.

The GYRLS love this opportunity to shop for little treats that remind them of the positive things they've accomplished, and we love rewarding them for a job well done! 👏🏻

Would you consider donating items to stock the TechGYRLS Store? Here's a list if things you could purchase. Donations may be dropped off at our main campus (106 State St.).

Thank you for your continued support of TechGYRLS and other programs at YWCA NETN and SWVA. We appreciate you! 🙏🏻

For Black-Owned Business Month, we’re proud to spotlight local business Crown Cutz Academy Bristol and owner Craig Charles.

Crown Cutz Academy has been helping people build careers for 30 years. The licensed academy offers training in barbering, cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, and instructor education, combining hands-on learning with state licensure preparation and career development.

Craig believes a haircut can change more than someone’s appearance—it can change their future. That belief is at the heart of an academy focused on opportunity, confidence, mentorship and service. Crown Cutz also gives back through workforce development, scholarships, free community haircut events, and local partnerships.

The academy is now enrolling for upcoming classes. The public can also book affordable barber, hair, skin, and nail services through its supervised student clinic. Ask about monthly Community Days, current promotions, and financial aid for those who qualify.

On this , we are reminded of the importance of community and compassion. YWCA’s work to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all is a collective effort, and each local YWCA across the country is essential in making this country safer for women and girls.

When women, girls, and families thrive, entire communities rise.

🎥TechGYRLS video!🎥

Last fall, our YWCA NETN and SWVA TechGYRLS partnered with Starscape Media to tape a podcast honoring the 20th anniversary of the program. Students planned and wrote the script as a group, assigned different roles, and spent a day filming on location at Starscape.

The GYRLS interviewed Tammy Alls, original director of our TechGYRLS program; Kathy Waugh, CEO at the time; and current TechGYRLS director Lorrie Campbell. Students also interviewed each other about their time in the program.

The video clearly demonstrates not only how TechGYRLS began but how it still serves students today. It's delightful and is sure to put a smile on your face!
