💧 “Why don’t I leave a urine sample at every prenatal visit?”

It’s a question we hear often!

Many patients are surprised to learn that routine urine dipstick testing at every prenatal appointment is no longer recommended for most low-risk pregnancies. Current evidence-based guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) show that universal urine dip screening at every visit does not reliably identify conditions such as preeclampsia or urinary tract infections in patients without symptoms or risk factors. (ACOG)

Instead, we focus on the screenings that have been proven to improve outcomes:

✅ Urine culture early in pregnancy to screen for asymptomatic bacteria
✅ Blood pressure monitoring at every visit
✅ Assessment for symptoms such as headaches, vision changes, swelling, pain with urination, or other concerns
✅ Additional urine testing when medically indicated

This approach allows us to provide evidence-based prenatal care while avoiding unnecessary testing, false-positive results, added costs, and extra stress for our patients. (ACOG)

At Bristol Gynecology & Obstetrics, we are committed to providing care that is guided by the latest research—not simply by tradition. If you ever have questions about a test (or why we’re not ordering one), we encourage you to ask. Understanding your care is an important part of a healthy pregnancy. ❤️
