Happy Friday!
It’s a heater here in Texas 🔥
That doesn’t stop us from getting horses out the door feeling their best!
This horse had a couple issues working against him to take into consideration in this setup. We need to support the hoof, relieve the sole, AND keep him performing at a high level.

Here’s a helpful tip to make your shoes really ✨shine!✨
We know looks aren’t everything, but why not make your shoes a little more flashy? 😉
Grinding your clips just a little can add some eye appeal, as shown on the left clip here. As you can see, there is a big difference between the clip that has been shined up, versus a clip left alone like the clip on the right!
This doesn’t affect functionality, just gives your shoe a cosmetic edge.
Looks aren’t everything, but good looks sure never hurt! 🤩

This hind hoof was a mess! Let’s fix it 💪🏼
This barrel horse came in having a couple problems with “popping” out of their turn, or struggling to keep their hind leg planted in the turn.
Lee Olsen CJF TE goes through how different degrees of traction can be achieved, and how a small difference in shoe can make a huge impact on your horse and their performance!
Keeping an open dialogue with your farrier is crucial to your horses performance, because a small change can make a huge difference! Sometimes small details seem insignificant, but discussing performance can help give you and your horse a winning edge!

Barefoot trimming - why is topping the hoof important?
One of the biggest issues we see in keeping horses barefoot is struggling with breakup. Here are a couple things we do to prevent hooves from cracking and becoming sore!
- sticking to a schedule! This has been said over and over but we’re here to beat the dead horse… keeping your horse on a short schedule will help hooves from crumbling and breaking up since no excess edges or leverage is applied to a properly trimmed hoof!
- Topping the trim! As shown here, we top the hoof to gather any sharp edges and create a bevel in the hoof wall that prevents contact with the ground directly. This bevel will keep the hoof healthy and intact through the cycle.

This long hoof turned out to be a really good foot hiding under a lot of length!
Once we took a couple nipper runs off, this hoof looked exactly like it should - a healthy barefoot hoof!
