Empowering Mobility: Tips for Assisting with Walking
Use a Gait Belt: A gait belt is a safety device you can put around the person's waist. It gives you a firm handle to hold, which is safer than holding their arms or clothing.
Walk Beside or Slightly Behind Them: Stand on the person's weaker side and slightly behind them. This position allows you to offer support without getting in their way and provides a good leverage point if they start to lose their balance.
Encourage Proper Footwear: Make sure the person is wearing stable, low-heeled shoes with non-slip soles. This can significantly reduce the risk of falling.
Communicate Clearly: Before you start walking, tell the person what you're going to do and where you're going. Talk them through each step, and ask how they're feeling.
Clear the Path: Before walking, ensure there are no obstacles in the way, such as loose rugs, furniture, or cords, that could cause them to trip.
