Brockton VNA Home Care and Hospice welcomed Lieutenant William Schlieman and Sergeant Nichole Anderson of the Brockton Police Department to our home office to host a presentation on Safety in the Home and Community. Brockton VNA takes the safety and security of our team members seriously. The officers provided our team with helpful tips on how to recognize threats, de-escalate stressful situations, and stay safe while traveling and treating patients in their homes. We are grateful to the officers for taking the time to meet with us and we are proud to be active members in the Brockton community.

Our Board of Directors were pleased to present the Irma Sims Rubenstein Clinical Excellence Award last week to Alitha - PT, DPT, CSRS, LSVT-Big who has brought her boundless energy and enthusiasm to every case and every patient.

She holds a Doctorate in Physical Therapy, a CSRS (Certified Stroke Recovery Specialist), and she is LSVT-Big certification (evidenced based Parkinson’s Disease program). The LSVT-Big program is one of the most challenging and time-consuming we offer to our patients in home physical therapy. The evidenced based program requires four days per week for 4 straight weeks. There is no wiggle room in that program due to its design and rigorous testing. It is a game changer for those living with Parkinson’s Disease and their improved movement, increased independence and reduced fall risk are all due to therapists like Alitha and their immense skill and charisma. I have a patient right now that went thru the program with Alitha and the great OT, Brian, who both went out of their territories to treat this woman and her Parkinson’s Disease with LSVT-Big. She lived alone and maintaining her independence and single living was important to her. Today, she continues to live independently, ambulates outside with her walker alone and performs her LSVT-Big exercises daily which she credits for all her success!

Alitha is also currently awaiting the results of her board certification in Neurologic Physical Therapy (NCS) through the APTA (American Physical Therapy Association) which is one of the most rigorous certification programs in physical therapy. She is driven. She is relentess and she demonstrates a true love of the field. On top of these incredible certifications, she is also a member of the APTA, International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society, Functional Neurological Disorder Society as well as advanced certification in Vestibular Rehab through Neurospark. And if that wasn’t enough, she is studying Python and how AI may be able to assist her in her physical therapy career.

Alitha is the model for the Professional Practice Model. She practices collaboratively, she communicates effectively with her colleagues as well as her patients, and as evidenced above, she is intensely focused on practicing evidenced based therapy to provide the highest quality, patient-centered care. She is our neuro guru. Everyone knows that if you have a neuro case, Alitha can help you through it and direct you to the most recent, evidenced based strategies to maximize their functional outcomes. In fact, she is currently awaiting notice of acceptance of a research paper from the ACRM: American Congress of Rehab Medicine. She is always willing to provide top notch care and keep our patient satisfaction at the highest levels. She is the clinician we all strive to be but rarely succeed.

Congratulations, Alitha, we are so grateful to have you on our team!

We are pleased to announced that Fara – LPN was one of this year’s Irma Sims Rubenstein Clinical Excellence Awards recipients.

This clinician is an excellent co-worker. I have frequently seen her training and assisting her fellow LPNs navigate the complex part of home care. She advocates wonderfully for Brockton VNA patients. She has purchased pill boxes for needy patients to better provide care to them. She compassionately educates our patients on the disease process and self-care.

This clinician always considers our patient's needs and is very flexible with her time and continually meets their needs. She does a wonderful job with documentation. As another clinician, it is very easy to see where she left off and where the next nurse needs to pick up.

She regularly participates in IDT meetings.

I recently ran into her in the hallway of a building we both visit when seeing patients. She was on the phone with a newer LPN, trying to help her with the computer over the phone. She is always ready to help another nurse if she is able to.

What truly sets this candidate apart is that this clinician is a kind, companionate and respectful co-worker and as a registered nurse, I truly benefit from being partnered with her. I personally think she does an excellent job and deserves recognition for all of her hard work.

Congratulations, Fara, on a well-deserved nomination. We are grateful to have you on our team.

We were pleased to present the Irma Sims Rubenstein Scholarship Award as well as the Aldrich Scholarship Award to LaVonette. Congratulations, LaVonette, on receiving these scholarships and the beautiful nomination which is below.

I am pleased to offer my strongest recommendation for this clinician , in support of her application for the Irma Sims Rubenstein and Aldrich Clinical Scholarships. This clinician is an exceptional Speech-Language Pathologist whose clinical expertise, professional dedication, and character make her highly deserving of this recognition.

With over 24 years of clinical experience, she brings a depth of knowledge and skill that is evident in every aspect of her work. In her current role at Brockton VNA, she provides outstanding care to a medically complex and diverse patient population. Her clinical judgment is sound, her interventions are evidence-based, and her ability to connect with patients and families is both compassionate and effective. She consistently demonstrates a commitment to achieving meaningful outcomes while maintaining the highest standards of care.

Prior to her work in home health, this clinician has extensive acute care experience at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital, where she served both ICU and general inpatient populations. Her ability to navigate complex clinical environments with confidence and professionalism speaks to her advanced skill set and adaptability.

She is also a respected educator and leader. As an ASHA-certified Clinical Instructor and mentor, she invests in the development of future clinicians, modeling excellence and integrity. She actively contributes to interdisciplinary team collaboration and has presented on the role of speech-language pathology in both clinical and community settings, including at the Brockton YMCA and Boston University School of Medicine Geriatrics Grand Rounds.

Beyond her impressive credentials and accomplishments, what truly distinguishes this clinician is her character. She is a consistent ambassador for positivity in the workplace, fostering a supportive, respectful, and collaborative environment. Her professionalism, humility, and dedication to lifelong learning-including her pursuit of a doctoral degree-reflect a genuine commitment to both personal and professional growth.

Her founding of Bridges Speech Language Pathology further highlights her initiative and passion for advancing the field through education, consulting, and community engagement. In every regard, this clinician exemplifies excellence in clinical practice, leadership, and character. I recommend her without reservation for this scholarship award and am confident she will continue to make significant contributions to the field of speech-language pathology.

Congratulations, LaVonette.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at yesterday’s Irma Sims Rubenstein Clinical Excellence Awards Ceremony at Thorny Lea Golf Club.

The Presidential Award is presented each year to the employee that best embodies our Agency values and serves as a role model for their peers. This year’s well-deserved recipient was Marissa – Clinical Educator – RN.

Below is our President/CEO, Michael Lyons’ speech.

This award is chosen by me to give to someone who embodies all that BVNA represents. I have lead BVNA for over a year now, and had to fill several key empty positions upon my arrival. One of the most important hires we made in the last year is today’s winner.

This person has been described as always smiling and eager to help; polite, kind, and works tirelessly to create an encouraging and collaborative atmosphere. Someone who has a bright, positive attitude, is a nursing expert, and is someone that we are lucky to have at BVNA.

Florence Nightingale once said: “Let us never consider ourselves finished nurses. We must be learning all of our lives.”

The role of Clinical Educator at a Home Health and Hospice Agency is an important but often overlooked and underappreciated position. However, it is not overlooked by me nor by the dozens of employees our Educator has impacted in her time here at BVNA. She has mentored new employees, given counsel to many of our clinicians, attended our IDT meetings, and helped us identify patients for our hospice program. She has established herself as a vital team member to our agency.

It is my pleasure to present this year’s BVNA Presidential Award to our Clinical Educator, Marissa.

Congratulations, Marissa, on being this year’s recipient.

In celebration of Nurses’ Week, we wanted to personally thank our incredible nurses for being part of our BVNA team and taking such exceptional care of our patients, whether as a field clinician or an administrative clinician. This year’s Nurses’ Week is celebrated from Wednesday, May 6 – Tuesday, May 12, 2026 and the theme is “The Power of Nurses”. This year’s theme celebrates the impact nurses have in improving healthcare, driving innovation, and prioritizing patient needs.

We are grateful for the positive impact on the lives of our patients with your compassion and impressive clinical skills and are thankful for the difference that you make in our patient’s lives each day. Your dedication to your patients is remarkable and you continually place the needs of your patients first.

We are proud of our significant history that began over 122 years ago with the very first nurse taking care of our patients back in 1904. Back in the early days, our nurses were visiting patients on foot or via bicycle. Winter spring, summer or fall, our nurses have seen patients in a myriad of weather including blizzards. During the infamous Blizzard of 1978, our nurses were actually seeing patients via snowmobiles. During this last 2026 Blizzard, one of our nurses walked to her patient to care for them because their own vehicle was blocked with a flat tire.

Today our nursing staff includes 57 employees that include field staff and administrative staff including LPN’s, RN’s, Liaisons, Supervisors, Clinical Directors and a Vice President of Clinical Services. Our 57 employees have a remarkable history of 465 combined years of tenure at Brockton VNA or an average of 8.15 years of service and eight nurses have twenty-seven (27) years of service or more at Brockton VNA, ranging from 27 to 38 years of service.

We are grateful to have all of our nurses on our team and appreciate your dedication and efforts in providing exceptional care to our patients.
