[U] Matter Story #8 | We All Want to Matter

Over the years I've had thousands of conversations with people who believed they were coming to The Hub to improve their health.

As those conversations unfolded, I noticed something remarkable.

Very few people were actually searching for smaller numbers on a scale or heavier weights on a barbell.

They were searching for something much deeper.

They wanted to feel present with their children.

They wanted to repair relationships.

They wanted to regain confidence.

They wanted to feel proud of the person looking back at them in the mirror.

In other words, they wanted to know that their life mattered.

That's why our tagline is [U] Matter.

It's not just something we print on shirts or hang on the wall.

It's a reminder that every person who walks through our doors already has value.

Sometimes they simply need a place—and a community—to remember it.

Question for reflection:

When do you feel most connected to the truth that your life matters?

Over the years I've learned that most people don't struggle because they lack answers.

They struggle because they're asking the wrong questions.

Someone wants to lose weight.

Someone wants to make more money.

Someone wants to grow a business.

Someone wants to bench press 315 pounds.

None of those goals are wrong.

But they're often only the beginning of the conversation.

One of the most important questions I've learned to ask is:

"How would achieving that improve the overall quality of your life?"

It's amazing what happens when people are given the space to look deeper.

Beneath the goal is often a desire for connection, purpose, confidence, belonging, love, freedom, or meaning.

The first answer is rarely the whole story.

Question for reflection:

What goal in your life might be pointing toward a deeper desire?

I think many of us have spent years trying to create a beautiful book cover for a book we haven't even written.

We're taught to focus on what people can see.

Our appearance.

Our achievements.

Our job title.

Our possessions.

Our image.

None of those things are inherently bad. But when they become the primary focus, we risk creating a life that looks impressive while feeling disconnected from what truly matters.

Over the years I've met people who achieved everything they thought they wanted only to discover they were still unfulfilled.

Not because they failed.

Because they spent all their energy perfecting the cover and very little time writing a story they genuinely wanted to live.

The goal isn't to ignore the cover.

The goal is to make sure the story inside is worth reading.

Question for reflection:

If your life were a book, would you be more focused on the cover or the story?

MICHELE'S HUG

Years ago, Michele walked into The Hub terrified.

She was uncomfortable in her own skin, and unsure if she even belonged in a gym.

Like many people, she believed her struggle was about weight.

Over time she began to lose weight, gain confidence, and trust herself in ways she never had before.

One day she came into the gym visibly emotional. When I asked what was going on, she shared something I'll never forget.

Her son had hugged her and said:

"Mommy, it's the first time I've been able to put my arms all the way around you."

That moment had nothing to do with a scale.

Nothing to do with calories.

Nothing to do with fitness.

It was about connection.

It was about participation.

It was about being fully present in her own life and relationships.

Over the years, I've learned that people rarely remember the number on the scale.

They remember the moments that become possible because they changed.

Question for reflection:

What part of your life are you longing to participate more fully in?
