Someone sent this news report to me, and I came across it on my own, as well. What an attention-grabbing headline, right?

So, what's the answer? Truthfully...it depends. If we are honest, and if research is honest, it will find that in some extreme cases, this is recommended as a last resort, and when done in a healthy manner, is really about setting boundaries and not having a goal of cutting someone off. The boundary, unfortunately, can be the catalyst for that sad outcome in some cases.

What does that mean? It means we have to be careful when navigating family matters. We have to be careful about abuse being tolerated, and we have to be intentional about being able to define abuse versus disagreement and dislike. It means, that when we set a boundary, the result may be a relationship disruption for one or both parties, which should never be entered into lightly. It means, this is a complex matter. No cookie cutter solutions exist. Therapy is hard, and navigating family systems can come with a lot of complications and layers to sort through.

I always recommend against making snap judgments whether a news story, video, TikTok, etc., etc. Understanding the entirety of the matter is vital for being fully-informed so we can make educated decisions about what we believe. Saying things out loud, and giving time to process those things, that can help.

Fantastic therapist!

Hi, I’m Kelli King, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor (LADC) with 25 years of experience helping people navigate life’s challenges. I earned my undergraduate degree in Psychology and a graduate degree in Community Counseling from Oklahoma State University.

I’ve worked with children, adolescents, adults, and couples, offering individual, group, and family therapy to address a wide range of issues, including depression, addiction, trauma, grief and loss, relationship struggles, and stress management. My approach is rooted in meeting each person where they are, and I draw from techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Therapy, and Solution-Focused interventions to tailor our work together to your unique needs.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with state and local agencies, such as drug courts, the Department of Human Services, Child Welfare, the Department of Corrections, and organizations like the Oklahoma Association of Problem and Compulsive Gambling. These experiences have given me valuable insight into the complexities people face and strengthened my commitment to providing compassionate, effective care.

Outside of work, I love spending time with family and friends, baking delicious treats, and traveling to explore new places. If you’re ready to take the next step toward healing and growth, I’d be honored to support you on your journey.

Part of being a therapist is to embrace and roll with sudden changes and unexpected situations. This helps to show you are also human, not some robot that spits out facts, figures, stats, and therapy jargon. No, we ARE real. Things happen and we must utilize the very coping mechanisms we encourage.

Case-in-point: Having a session, wrapping up, I see a text from my husband come through my tablet (he never does this when he knows I'm in session). Client still in office, I look at message and it reads:

"Just locked myself out of the house. HELP!"

It's a quick moment and I choose to laughingly share this with my Client as we are ending the session. It's a warm moment and one that provides laughter and furthers the connection. Quick. Simple. No harm in disclosing. A human moment.

Incidentally, I quickly did a drive-by of my house, opened the garage door, and back to work within 2 min (love living close by). No anxiety. No stress. Just human. My client in the waiting area saw me leaving, and I simply stated that I had to quickly run to open the garage for my husband, and would return promptly. Another good laugh. Another human connection moment.

There was no time spent discussing my details. Things moved on. Sessions happened, and therapy was done. But, the connections were real and I think it was an important lesson in recognizing that when we encourage our clients to "just breathe" and not panic when life changes, we must (ourselves) be willing to do that very thing.

What a great moment. What a human moment.

Copied this post from a friend and colleague. These are powerful words. We often don't consider what all the unsaid things are doing to us internally. Each time you "go along to get long," each time you decide, "it's not worth it, no one will listen to me anyway," each time you say to yourself, "what does it really matter?"

Talking through these things in a therapeutic setting helps you better understand your thoughts and feelings, and can help give you the tools to advocate for yourself more effectively. You are not alone and you can learn new ways of thinking.
