On September 2, 1945, the formal surrender documents were signed aboard the USS Missouri, bringing World War II to an end. The men and women who served in that war gave everything they had. We are sad to hear of the passing of our former long time staff artist and hand etcher Chuck Anderson. He was a fun guy and amazing talent. Chuck was the creator of Faces in the Stands that UNL licensed and sold where you could send in your photo and he would draw you in Memorial Stadium cheering the Huskers.

A short time after Chuck began working with Palmer Monument/Nebraska Memorials he created a masterpiece with his Grandma and Grandpa scenes. As with his Husker art it was common for a family to insert their home/garden or tractor into the scene to add personalization of the memorial. No doubt he probably regretted creating that work of art after reproducing and etching it several hundred times. (On average it takes 4.5 days to do that scene with a hand held diamond tool.)

Thousands of families have Chucks commissioned art on their stones. One year Chuck and I sat down and figured out he had done 168 etchings in various sizes which is an incredible toll on the hands and eyes.

Over the years Chuck and I shared fishing secrets, we told stories about our kids and poked fun at each other. Chuck aka Chuckles had a great laugh and it was common to hear it around the office.

I credit Chuck with helping us grow our business as his etchings made us very popular in our area. I always joked with Chuck that he wasnt allowed to retire until he found his replacement. Well...he apparently took me seriously as Chuck found and trained his replacement before finally coming in one June to tell me he was all done.

After that I enjoyed seeing him in a bar or grocery store. He'd tell me about a trip to the islands, a tall fishing tail or where he had been on a motorcycle ride. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his friends who were often like family and everyone who knew him.

We are told there is a Celebration of Life/Potluck for Charles "Chuck" "Chuckles" Andersen Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Sylvester' Bar 6pm. Per family there will be no funeral services.

Chuck will be missed by myself (Chris) and all of his Palmer Monument Family.
