You can have a lineup of good products and still not have the right product mix.

So where do you start?

Here’s the 3-step check I use with clients:
1️⃣ Take inventory. List everything you offer and identify the job each product, service or experience is there to do.

2️⃣ Evaluate each one. Choose consistent criteria that matter to your business—financial performance, consumer demand, brand alignment, operational efficiency, etc.—and ask: Is it earning its place?

3️⃣ Step back and look at the whole mix. Are there gaps? Overlap? Does the portfolio as a whole support what you want to be known for and what you’re building?

Our goal isn’t necessarily to cut products. It’s to right-size your mix for the business you want to build.

🎙️ Clint and I dig into how to think through all three—including examples from his experience building Start Right Foods—in Ep. 202 of the Food Business Marketing Podcast.

🩺💡📧Listen wherever you get your podcasts then download your Brand Checkup (link in bio) to get started thinking about building a cohesive brand. Every Friday I will send you one brand building insight and three tips or questions that you can put into action!

Have done a review of your products and services in the past year?

Every product or service you offer requires some combination of time, money and attention—so it’s worth asking whether each one is earning its place AND whether the mix as a whole makes sense for where your business is going.

That’s what Clint and I dig into in this week’s episode, including some real examples from his experience building Start Right Foods.

🌻Flower farmers…how did you get started growing and selling flowers on your farm? Would you do it again?

Asking for future me, but also general knowledge in my work with farmers.

As the video says, I hope you know how much joy you bring to the world! ☀️🐝🌸

More sales sounds like a good thing…but are you focused on the right things at the right time?

Sales & distribution can get complicated FAST. And once you choose a direction, how do you know when to stay the course—or reassess?

In Ep. 201 of the Food Business Marketing Podcast, Clint and I dig into three areas to consider:

🛒Are you selling in the right channels? Not every product or business belongs everywhere. Where can you build a strong foothold without spreading yourself too thin?

🛒How will you get your product to the end user? Distribution affects your margins, operations and ultimately whether those sales are actually helping your business, or not.

🛒Are you still focused on the right things?
Markets change. Costs change. Your business changes. You might change. A strategy gives you direction AND a way to recognize when it’s time to reassess.

Clint also shares a real (and costly 😬) example from his business Start Right Foods that brings that last point to life.

Have you heard the phrase the only thing constant is change? We can count on change!

🎙️The food business maintenance check up series continues to help you assess& evolve. This time we are talking about Sales and Distribution.

Clint has a good story about reviewing assumptions/plans when circumstances change. You can hear that here, and my next post will share more about what’s in the episode.

I encourage you to take a listen so you can continue your own food business maintenance checkup!

🛒 Fixa Foods is shaking up shopping carts! They are a hyper local fresh pesto business in Central Oregon (Bend, OR to be exact)…follow them on IG to hear when they start shipping this fall.

Barb was a JOY to work with! And I’ve had so much fun testing Fixa fresh pestos on and in things I’ve been making…all I can say is 🤩. No more boring meals around here.

Can’t wait for you to be able to try. The flavors are just phenomenal.

Check out Fixafoods.com to get fresh inspiration from their unique meal starter “formula” 👀

More to come!

It’s interesting how two foods in the same category can be so different. No shade to Bob’s quick oats, I’ve bought them for years…until now!

Learning about Heartland Craft Grains oats from Rochelle is like when I learned about cooking dry beans from Lisa Food/ocracy … true game changers! These oats are next level in terms of taste and I have to guess nutrition too.

I share this to celebrate food that’s closer to (or straight from) our farmers when you can find options. It’s like a different ballgame.

And here you can see one of the things I made from my 10lb blueberry box too! 🤩🫐🍋

➡️ Are there things like dry beans or whole oats or even peeling your own carrots instead of baby carrots…that you are interested in doing, but feels like a lot of work? I’d love to hear/learn!
