β One of our recent rehab graduates, Tom Green, recently shared about his experience in physical therapy.
π "Over the past year, my life has changed in ways I never imagined. After a severe infection led to the amputation of my left leg below the knee, I went from being completely non-ambulatory and dependent on a wheelchair to beginning a journey of rebuilding my strength and confidence. Entering rehabilitation was overwhelming, but I chose to focus on each small step forward instead of what I had lost.
Receiving my prosthetic leg was the beginning of a new chapter. Physical therapy challenged me physically and mentally, but my therapists never stopped encouraging me to keep pushing. What started as simply learning to stand gradually became learning to balance, then taking a few steps, walking with a walker, and eventually walking independently. Every milestone that once seemed impossible became another reminder that healing is a process worth fighting for.
I also knew that my success depended on the work I put in outside of therapy. I committed myself to improving my overall health by making healthier food choices, faithfully participating in my therapy exercises, and steadily losing weight. Since beginning this journey, I have lost nearly 50 pounds, making each new milestone with my prosthetic leg more achievable. Every pound lost and every exercise completed became another investment in my independence.
Today, I am walking confidently with my prosthetic leg, which I affectionately named 'Gabe.' I can walk the halls without relying on my walker, stand for extended periods, and participate in daily activities that once felt impossible. The greatest reward is that I am now preparing to transition from long-term care back into the community and live independently again. My rehabilitation has restored far more than my mobility β it has restored my confidence, my independence, and my hope for the future.
I am deeply grateful to the physical therapy team and everyone who encouraged me throughout this journey. Their patience, expertise, and unwavering support helped me accomplish goals I once thought were impossible. My story is proof that with determination, excellent rehabilitation, and a strong support system, remarkable progress can happen one step at a time. A year ago, I could not imagine walking again. Today, I am not only walking β I am preparing to step into the next chapter of my life with confidence and gratitude."
Congratulations, Tom! We are so proud of everything you have accomplished! π
