drfeliciaberry

drfeliciaberry I'm a trauma psychologist specializing in the use of holistic & scientifically proven treatments. Will I ever be able to live without the burden of my traumas?

I help trauma survivors on their healing journey to successfully reclaim their lives. Telehealth offered in AL, AZ, CO, DC, GA, IL, NC, NV, TN, TX, VA & more I have a unique perspective because I previously served as a National Consultant for Prolonged Exposure Therapy in the VA and worked directly with the treatment developers, Drs. Edna Foa and Elizabeth Hembree, am certified in 2 of the 3 PTSD

treatments recommended by the National Center for PTSD, am the author of Building Courage and Resilience After Trauma, am a preferred provider for police and firefighters in multiple metro Atlanta municipalities, and am a thriving trauma survivor and psychologist with experience successfully helping various trauma survivors on their healing journey using holistic and scientifically proven treatments. The top questions people would have for me are: Is it really possible to heal from trauma after all these years? Will I ever be normal again and stop feeling so crazy? Will this pain ever go away? How can I stop being on the edge all the time, irritable, angry? Why can’t I just get over this? I provide therapy to adults in individual, small group, and couples therapy mainly via telehealth, but may return to the office before the end of the year (2021). Know that help is available and you are not alone.

Stress isn’t just something you think. It’s something you experience.

It shows up in your body.
It shows up in your emotions.
It shows up in your behavior.

And sometimes, what looks like an “overreaction” is actually your nervous system responding to something it learned to survive.

When we understand how stress shows up, we can respond with more awareness instead of judgment.

Healing isn’t about pushing through.
It’s creating the conditions where your mind and body can function optimally.

Take a moment to check in with yourself:
Where is stress showing up for you?

This is your friendly reminder to HEAL, forgive (it’s for you, not letting the offender off th hook), and step away from distractions keeping you from your healing and blessings.

Stepping away allows you time to do the work.

No matter who you are, how esteemed or feeling invisible, wealthy or poor, a person of faith or not, how much you help others or not, knowledge &/or wisdom, or lacking in these areas, YOU are RESPONSIBLE for your own WORK to HEAL & LIVE FREE.

Finally circled back to share why I’ve been MIA.
* It was time to step away & attend to myself & some relationships
* I needed to step away to do my own work to repair and heal some relationships
* I needed to step away in order to post authentically
* My restoration season required being focused on GOD
* It required forgiving others to remove barriers to what God has for me
* Forgiveness is for me(& you), not those who caused the pain
* Taking time for ourselves is more than ok; it’s a necessity
* None of us are above doing the required work to be mentally and emotionally healthy
* Let this be your encouragement and reminder to do your own work of healing and forgiving

It’s been a while…This message is to encourage you to give self-love today before giving it to others. That can be thinking kind thoughts about yourself, choosing to exercise or eat better, do something nice for yourself like take a bath or pick a flower or buy some, etc…You’re worth it and don’t forget it!

June is PTSD Awareness Month

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is diagnosed after someone experiences a life-threatening event or s*xual assault with symptoms (Intrusion, Avoidance, Negative Thoughts & Emotions, & Arousal) lasting longer than a month.

These symptoms interfere with the person’s functioning, leading to disordered functioning, which is where the D, Disorder comes from.

The brain experiences changes as a result of the trauma, which leads to behavioral and emotional changes.

The development of PTSD is not due to weakness, but changes in the brain.

The majority of the population experiences a traumatic event, but only ~8% develop PTSD.

The more aware we are of what causes PTSD, the more we can reduce the stigma of it.

Mental Health Awareness
Are you as dependable to yourself as you are to others?
Do you show up for yourself like you do for others?
If not, this is your sign to reevaluate how you show up for yourself; YOU MATTER.
Thank you for your morning meditations. It hit different today. 🥰

Mental Health Awareness PSA:
Behavior Changes to Pay Attention to

Sleep changes, eating or weight changes, isolating or being withdrawn, being more irritable, wearing the “I’m OK mask,” problems w/attention or memory, using substances, shopping, & s*x, etc., to further mask how you feel, to name a few.

It’s ok to not be ok, but it’s not to stay there.

Make your mental health a priority.

Remember, mental health is a vibe all by itself.
