Not all snacks are equal — some calm, some alert, and some organize. And we’re not talking healthy vs. unhealthy (although that is important!)! 🧠

Chewy, resistive foods (jerky, dried fruit, tough gum) ORGANIZE the body. Sucking through a straw (protein shakes, CamelBak) CALMS it. Crunchy, sour, or fizzy snacks (chips, sour candy, sparkling water) ALERT it.

Snack smarter (and healthier!)

🎨✨ Sometimes, it’s all about how we set up the activity!

Adapting everyday activities can help our kiddos make meaningful strides toward their OT goals—without taking away the fun.

By putting the paper on the wall, we’re encouraging head and postural control while having the arm and wrist work against gravity. 💪🧠

The best part? They still feel like they’re simply getting to do exactly what they asked to do: PAINT! 🎨

🍎All day your kid held it together — sitting still, following directions, managing sensory input. They walk in the door depleted, and low blood sugar turns “hangry” into full dysregulation.

As an OT: regulation first, talking second.

✅ Be sure you packed protein rich snacks and meals for their school day
✅ Protein snack ready before they’re home
✅ Skip “how was school?” — give quiet first
✅ Heavy work: carry something, jump, a tight hug
✅ Let the crash happen without shame — it means home feels safe

This is “afterschool crash,” not a discipline problem. 💛

Movement is good for everyone! Taking movement breaks through throughout the day can help support, focus, regulation, energy, and overall well-being. 🤸

We always prioritize creativity and having fun while making sure our kiddos are getting the sensory input their bodies need. 💛

Whether we’re spinning through shaving cream, climbing, jumping, crashing, or getting messy, there is always a purpose behind the play. We want our kiddos to have a space where they can explore, build confidence, communicate their needs, and feel successful.

Because when kids are having fun, feeling safe, and enjoying themselves, they’re more ready to engage, learn, and grow. 🧠✨

Our goal? That every kiddo leaves WEPlay with a smile on their face. 😊

The transition back to school can be HARD for kids.

After a summer of more flexibility, movement, sleep, and downtime, kids are suddenly adjusting to earlier mornings, new routines, longer periods of sitting, increased sensory input, transitions, academic demands, social expectations, and fewer opportunities to move and regulate throughout the day.

That’s a LOT for a developing nervous system.

Extra tiredness, big emotions, meltdowns, difficulty with transitions, or changes in behavior can all be signs that a child is still adjusting to the demands of the school day.

As pediatric OTs, we encourage patience, predictable routines, movement breaks, sensory strategies, and time to adjust.

The transition takes time and that’s okay!

Movement isn’t just exercise…it’s regulation. 🧠👣🩷

As pediatric OTs, we use movement all day long because we know how much it can support a child’s attention, body awareness, coordination, sensory processing, and regulation.

And honestly? The same goes for us.

Regulation isn’t just something we teach kids. It’s something we all need.
