Let’s talk UTIs in kids!

Did you know that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has updated its recommendations for diagnosing and treating urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children?

UTIs are one of the more common bacterial infections we see in pediatrics, especially in younger children. And sometimes, the symptoms aren’t as obvious as you might think! 👀

🔎 What should parents watch for?
💛 Fever without an obvious cause
💙 Pain or burning when urinating
💚 Frequent trips to the bathroom
❤️ New daytime accidents or bedwetting

SO, WHAT DO WE NEED TO KNOW?
✅ Updated guidance addresses children from 8 days through 5 years of age.
✅ Urine testing AND urine cultures play an important role in confirming a UTI.
✅ Shorter antibiotic courses! Not every UTI requires the traditional 10 days of antibiotics. For many children, shorter courses may be appropriate depending on their age, symptoms, and severity of infection.
✅ After a first UTI with fever in a young child, a kidney and bladder ultrasound may be recommended to evaluate the urinary tract.

A LITTLE PREVENTION GOES A LONG WAY!
Encourage plenty of fluids, regular bathroom breaks, and healthy bowel habits. Constipation and holding urine can contribute to recurrent UTIs!

🚨 IMPORTANT: A fever in a baby younger than 3 months should always be evaluated promptly by a medical professional.

The Wesson Peewee Football Team stopped by for the big reveal of their very own exam room! 🏈

One of our favorite things about our new clinic is being able to bring a little piece of our surrounding communities inside our walls. Each school-themed room was created to celebrate the schools, students, and teams that make our communities so special!

A huge THANK YOU to these young athletes and their families for joining us and helping make this reveal so much fun! We loved having y’all!
