Happy 3rd Anniversary to Healing Tides Midwifery! 3 years ago today, I closed escrow on the home of my practice!

I can barely believe everything that has happened since and am so proud of my practice and the whole team!

And now it is a licensed Birth Center!

Grateful for the sounds of the powerful women who have birthed here and the sweet babies who have had their first breaths and snuggles here.

Thank you to all of the families who have entered this space with trust! I will never take that lightly 💕

A huge, victorious congratulations to Ally on her successful VBAC!!!

Baby Milo was born on July 8th weighing 8 # 3oz!

Ally’s last delivery was a cesarian section. She really wanted to deliver Milo via VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarian). After some discussion about the specifics of her pregnancy and careful planning, she decided on a planned hospital birth at Asante Rogue, where they support women choosing VBACs.

Ally is a deeply dedicated mother who pours every ounce of her energy into caring for her children. She brought that same care and determination to her delivery of her son, Milo!

Ally and Matthew brought Milo home to join excited big sisters Aveda, Wren, and Ember. Congratulations to their whole family on the beautiful new addition!

Midwifery care is not always about community birth. It is also about education, advocacy, support in achieving best outcomes, and taking the time to make sure mothers feel heard, regardless of where they choose to birth! I am grateful for the hospitality-based doctors and midwives who work closely with our practice and these moms to empower them at their births, locally, up north, and in the valley!

So delighted to see this as RCOG policy, and much appreciation to authors, especially obstetrician Andrew Weeks who has been advocating for 'optimal cord management' for decades..
"The minutes after birth are now recognised as a time of remarkable change within the baby and we have learned that interfering with this natural process can cause potential harm...
Early cord clamping will result in the baby having a lower blood volume as it is estimated that a baby at full term will receive around 30% of its total blood volume from placental transfer via the umbilical cord. The decision on timing to clamp the umbilical cord should be based on observations of the baby, its heart rate and breathing rather than a predefined interval after birth. Also, the palpable pulsation of the cord is unrelated to the blood flowing back and forth therefore it should not be used to guide the time when clamping occurs. Clamping at the placental end allows some blood in the cord to transfer to the newborn. There are other benefits to the baby from the placental transfer of blood such as transfer of stem cells."

Welcome, Sweet Baby Kaleea who was born on July 18th in the wee hours of the morning!

Kaleea was born at home to Mom and Dad, Casey and Brian, surrounded by her loving and supportive sisters on their beautiful homestead.

She weighed 7 # 10oz.

Casey worked hard through a relatively short but incredibly intense labor. As her labor progressed, her daughters woke up one by one to be a part of this exciting event. Casey was delighted to be able to give birth just like this, in her unique home with her family and a supportive team. I remember her vividly describing this goal when we first met. We were delighted to be able to help make that happen, and SO proud of her strength and determination.

Kaleea is a lucky baby to get to grow up as a part of such a loving family in an incredibly beautiful place.

Another reason this birth felt special to me was that Casey and Kaleea were well-supported by my incredibly skilled midwife friend, Bailey, who came to cover the practice for the weekend from the Corvallis Birth Center so that I could join my family for a reunion out of town. Knowing Bailey’s heart and skill, I felt deeply confident that they were in excellent hands. This is an important part of keeping Healing Tides Midwifery sustainable, and I am grateful.
