Here you see a slide on the GCS-P which is showing to be a more reliable predictor of mortality in trauma than just the GCS.
The GCS, also known as Glasgow Coma Scale, is a tool used to assess functional consciousness and neurological status. The "P" stands for "Pupils" which is a recent addendum gaining evidence support. 👁
The functions are measured as the following:
Eye Response
1 No eye opening
2 Eye opens to pain
3 Eye opens to verbal command
4 Eye opens spontaneously
Verbal Response
1 None
2 Incomprehensible sounds
3 Inappropriate words
4 Confused
5 Oriented
Motor Response
1 None
2 Extension to pain
3 Flexion to pain
4 Withdraw from pain
5 Localizing pain
6 Follows commands
Pupils
-2 if both unreactive
-1 if 1 unreactive
0 both are reactive
This works by calculating the GCS and subtracting the P score determined. You're left with a score that us showing to be an improved marker for 30-day prediction of mortality. DM me if you want some more links!
