We talk a lot about diagnosis.
We don’t talk enough about what we do with it.
In our work, a diagnosis plays two very different roles:
✅ Powerful tool
👉Gives language and relief (“Now I understand what’s going on.”)
👉Opens doors to services and supports
👉Helps professionals coordinate care with a shared framework
⚠️ Potential trap
👉Becomes the whole identity: “This is all I am / all my child is.”
👉Freezes families in overwhelm
👉Distracts from the real question: How is this person actually functioning right now?
Especially with conditions like anxiety, ADHD, autism, OCD, processing and language disorders, many diagnoses are based on observations and reports, not a single definitive test. That means they’re useful maps, not absolute truths.
Our stance:
Use the diagnosis to guide support.
Don’t let it define the person.
Look beyond the label to:
✅Everyday function
✅Strengths and gifts
✅Passions, values, and purpose
A label can be a starting point.
It should never be the finish line.
