Oh for the love of everything that’s holy. Just kidding (kinda). Weight loss can be a very difficult discussion (and sometimes a very personal topic) and you’d be surprised how many people choose speed over caution, quantity over quality, etc. It’s important for you to recognize when something is legitimate vs when something is too good to be true. There are no foods or pills that will magically burn fat or target particular areas of your body. No supplements that will change your metabolism or regimens that will melt the pounds away. There’s physically no way for you to change your genetics (despite science being able to change a lot of other things currently) so please be careful when making decisions or purchases that are going to put your bank account into the negative and not the scale. The image above has some great things to look out for when trying to make an educated decision but ultimately, always reach out to your healthcare provider or dietary specialist if you’re concerned or interested in trying something and are wary of trying them. If you even so much as question the method or product, it already means your brain isn’t confident and asking for additional help will only make your weight loss experience that much better-not worse.

It’s been a few weeks my friends but that’s because it’s SUMMER!! And summer should be a time of relaxing and fun and of course, lots of social events. With this in mind, summer can also be a hard time to sustain or lose weight so here’s a few tips/pointers to keep you grounded: 1) start to normalize the healthy food choices that you’ve instilled all year long. That shouldn’t end because it’s a birthday or a BBQ or a wedding-your goals should always be to strive for healthy(ish) choices and making do with what’s provided. And if there’s really nothing to choose from, don’t feel bad that you fed yourself before you went or brought things you know you can eat so you can stay on track. The only one you’re fooling is yourself so stand tall and promote healthy living as best you can. 2) try not to beat yourself up if you have a calorie dense meal here and there-get up the next day and do some damage control. One day’s events shouldn’t affect your entire week or weekend. And again, always do what’s best for you-you hold the control here. 3. If you’ve been struggling more than you’d like to admit, it’s OK. We’ve got a few weeks left so while you shouldn’t throw caution to the wind, have some solace in knowing that the summer will be over before you know it and more schedules can come back into play, allowing you to get back into your routine (just make sure that you pull that trigger when it’s time!) Overall, enjoy yourself because, as is always the case every summer, it will blow out as fast as it blew in. ☀️

The single most important thing you can do for yourself is take care of your body and that includes eating healthy foods, exercising daily, and preventing obesity. One of the biggest predictors of cancer is obesity believe it or not. Between the constant inflammation, hormone fluctuations, and high levels of insulin, your body responds like a sponge and ain’t no one wringing that bad boy out to dry. Medications can work but they’re just a tool to help right your body back up. And people can become resistant to the drug and/or require heavier doses as they continue to not take care of the existing problem. So please-there’s so much help out there (including in here 😉)-so take the time to take care of yourself before it’s too late.

I know, I know…another post about protein..But this one is a little different, I promise! I won’t sit here and beg you to eat your weight in protein or try some crazy mathematical scheme to figure out how much you’re having (or not having) daily (I mean you CAN do this, but that’s not the purpose of this post today). Recent studies have shown that having protein sources in the morning ONLY (meaning absolutely no sugars and starches…so goodbye fruit and toast) have been proven to help utilize the excess stored overnight sugars promptly, promote a stimulation of the metabolism due to the longer breakdown process of proteins and/or fats, and an overall fuller feeling for a longer period of time. A win-win for someone trying to change their current metabolic state, capitalize on their muscle-building, and/or trying to incorporate some weight loss! A couple of nice examples would be a protein shake containing protein powder with little to no carbohydrates mixed with water only, eggs (in any shape or form), lean animal meats like turkey, steak, or chicken, or plain yogurt with no fruit mixed in. It can be hard not to associate the bread or fruit in the AM so if you just want to attempt this a couple of mornings a week, you’ll still be winning! Try it sometime-I think you may like the results 😉

Running hasn’t always been a part of my life but it has slowly turned into who I’ve become (so far). No greater therapy, no greater effort, and no greater achievement (especially in terrible weather conditions) would have come from anything else. I know that running is not for everybody (and not everybody can physically run) but to see some of these influencers knock running but kind of shame the exercise all together was something I just couldn’t let go. ANY form of physical activity is a good one and while I do agree that strength and weight training, walking, swimming, running, etc all have their benefits, the BIGGEST predictor in weight loss is FOOD. You can lift until you’re blue in the face but if you’re superseding your calorie content for the day, you’re not getting anywhere fast. This is me: a 42 year old working mom who loves red meat, dark and stormy’s, and dessert every night. If I wanted to be at my optimal fitness goal, I would have to cut those things out-not put down the running shoes. So for my friends on social media, please try to take everything you read, see, and hear with a grain of salt (yes, even this post) because you’re a lot smarter than you think and when something seems ridiculous, it probably is.

Lots of docs and medical facilities get a bad rep for pushing pills and prescription drugs to help aide an illness or disease. While we try to be open-minded and reasonable in our office, the fact of the matter is that these drugs are needed to keep a person alive most often than not. I’m not talking about the common cold, I’m referring to the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, hypertension, gout, kidney failure, thyroiditis, and yes, even obesity. In reality, diet and exercise would most likely control or even cure these issues most times but the OTHER reality is that most people struggle to do this by themselves. You may not think so but your health and longevity is ALWAYS our top priority and if a patient can’t prove to help themselves, then we have to resort to the things that WILL. Because at the end of the day, these diseases can absolutely cause more problems that can lead to hospitalization and/or death in which case, you don’t leave us many alternatives. So while rubbing witch hazel on your body can help with irritation, rubbing it on your thyroid gland won’t help your endocrine system react appropriately. So a nice, “thanks for keeping me alive doc,” wouldn’t be the worst IMO. 🤨😉😃

As we approach summer, summer vacations are soon to follow and with that come the fabulous (and not so fabulous) things that come with it. Too often we have patients come in complaining of a stomach bug or food poisoning but it’s come to my attention that people are unaware of which is actually which so let’s divulge! Food poisoning is not usually transmissible and symptoms typically appear within a couple of hours of being exposed to said food. It usually only affects your gastrointestinal system and can be gone in as little as a day or just a couple of days. Food poisoning happens when a human ingests food that is covered in bacteria (think undercooked food, food that has been sitting out too long, and/or patrons who haven’t washed their hands whilst serving you. Ew.). Stomach bugs however, are quite contagious and can take a few days to rear its ugly head in a household. It is a virus that typically involves similar gastro issues followed by fever, fatigue, and severe dehydration. Stomach flus are famous for happening when you’re in close quarters with someone who has contracted it (I.e. cruise ships!). These viruses can last longer than food poisoning but more often than not, rest and hydration can fix both. However! If you have a fever that won’t go down, blood in your stool or urine, or you become incoherent, it’s time to see the doc!

Throw me a bone! I have lots of patients who have come from their recent bone density or dexa scan to go over their new diagnosis of either osteopenia or osteoporosis (unfortunately). Most of the time it affects women due to the lack or hormones that help support bone growth (thanks for everything menopause!) In short, osteoporosis is a “silent” disease that causes low bone mass and overall deterioration-it’s labeled as silent because people can’t see or feel it until they break a bone. Breaking down bones and replacing them is a normal bodily function until about age 35 when the breaking starts to outrace the growth. Most people assume it’s a calcium and vitamin D deficiency but it can stem from hormonal changes, having a petite body shape, excess smoking and alcohol intake, lack of physical activity, and/or steroidal medications. Overall, it’s important for patients to stay as healthy and physically active as possible to prevent this. Physical activity should include cardio but also strength or weight training as well, since this will help keep the muscles strong and supportive around the bones themselves. Just one more reason to take care of your body for as long as you can-you owe it to yourself ❤️

Wedding season!! I love going to weddings-mostly because it means a night out for mom and dad that involves dinner, drinks, and dancing! Most of the time, I tell patients to have a great time and not worry about the calories for the evening but if you have several events back to back in a short timespan, it may not be the worst idea to try to modify the evening to fit your needs and no better way to start than with cocktails!
A couple of ideas for low calorie/low sugar drinks are:
Tequila or vodka with club soda and lime, Diet Coke and rum, gin with club soda and a splash of grapefruit juice, Malibu rum (or any coconut rum) with club soda and a splash of pineapple juice, vanilla vodka and Diet Coke, and vodka with club soda and a splash of cranberry juice are just a few ideas to keep the diet steady but also keep the party going! Now get on that dance floor and get some extra steps in to celebrate the new couple (and your ability to be careful but still have a good time). Cheers!!

One of my favorite questions to answer is: where are my kidneys?! (I’m not kidding when I say this gets asked almost daily). First thing to know is that you actually have two kidneys (not one) and that they’re bean-sized and located on your lower back, sitting just below the rib cage. The next important thing to know is that your kidneys help to filter out your blood, eliminating waste and extra fluid for you to eventually urinate out. But not only does it balance your fluids, but it’s responsible for red blood cell production, maintaining your blood pressure, and keeping your bones strong! So you can imagine the importance of these organs staying nice and healthy. When a patient has kidney disease, it means it can no longer filter the blood correctly and that’s where infections and stones can develop, as well as the possibility of a kidney transplant or dialysis. People with diabetes or hypertension run a higher risk of this happening but the graph shows a general list of possible side effects to kidney issues in case you may be experiencing some unusual symptoms as of late. This is why it’s super important to take care of yourself through nutrition, maintain a healthy weight, and keep yourself hydrated-the goal is not for your body to work harder, only smarter 😉
