When most people think of acupuncture, they picture the thin filiform needles that are used in clinics today.

But acupuncture was actually much broader than that. Over 2,000 years ago, the Ling Shu described nine different types of needles, which goes to show that classical Chinese medicine had a much more complex understanding of needling than what most people are aware of.

So while the filiform needle has become the face of acupuncture, it isn't the whole picture.

Volufiline is derived from Anemarrhena asphodeloides, aka Zhi Mu, and is marketed as a plumping ingredient that may promote fat-cell activity where fat cells are already present. That is why the commonly cited study looked at breast tissue.

But breast and facial tissue are not the same, and we don't have strong evidence that Volufiline meaningfully “plumps” the face in the same way.

So, is it a topical filler replacement? Probably not.
