Chushu might have started yesterday, but I’m not actually late. Solar terms last roughly two weeks, and this one continues until Bailu begins on September 7.

This window should be understood as a transition, not a hard cutoff. Summer heat and dampness may still hang around while the first signs of autumn dryness start to become noticeable.

The solar terms are a guide for working with the seasons, but your climate, constitution, and body are always the best things to pay attention to.

If seasonal transitions tend to hit you hard, this is a good time to start preparing before autumn fully sets in and cold and flu season is upon us. Book through the link in my profile if you could use a tune-up.

Happy birthday to the late and great Dr. Mutulu Shakur, born August 8, 1950.

Shakur was a Black liberation activist, political prisoner, and acupuncturist whose work at Lincoln Detox helped shape one of the most widely used auricular acupuncture protocols in the world.

But the history of Lincoln Detox is about much more than five needles. It’s a story of the Young Lords and Black liberation organizers responding to a he**in epidemic, medical neglect, surveillance, and state repression by building healthcare for their own communities.

It’s also a story of exchange between Black, Puerto Rican, and Chinese communities. Mutulu’s first exposure to acupuncture came through Chinese practitioners in NYC’s Chinatown.

And Lincoln wasn’t the only place where Black radicals were engaging with Chinese medicine. In 1972, Black Panther physician Dr. Tolbert Small traveled to China with a Panther delegation, where he observed acupuncture and the work of barefoot doctors. He later incorporated acupuncture into his community medical practice in Oakland.

More than 50 years later, that lineage continues through community acupuncture and harm-reduction organizations like OnPoint NYC.

Happy birthday, Dr. Shakur. Your legacy lives on.

Chinese medicine prescribes herbs based on pattern, not diagnosis alone. The same infection can present as damp-heat, cold-damp, Spleen qi deficiency, or something else entirely.

If you’d like to use herbs to support your recovery, hit me up, and we can get you on a dank formula tailored to your specific presentation. Link in bio ☻

In Chinese medicine, sweating doesn’t just mean you’re hot. It can tell us how the body is regulating heat, fluids, qi, and the pores. The amount, timing, smell, texture, and location all give clues about what’s happening internally.
