Melanie Stern, LMHC Psychotherapist in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn & Virtual. Anxiety, substance use, ADHD & more. I offer a free 15-minute consultation. Feel free to reach out.

I’m a licensed mental health counselor in private practice in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, also seeing clients virtually. I’m committed to bridging the gap between where you are and where you want to be. I specialize in anxiety, substance use, and ADHD, and I also work with people who want to connect more deeply with their emotions and adults struggling to fully launch. Whether someone is managing anxiety, navigating ADHD, rethinking their relationship with alcohol or substances, or feeling stuck in old patterns, I meet them where they are. My work is psychodynamic at its core, woven with CBT, systems, and trauma-informed approaches, and I take a harm reduction stance across everything I do. I believe in the power of the therapy relationship and in people’s capacity for real change, and I also offer concrete, practical support along the way. I value collaboration and regularly partner with psychiatrists, treatment programs, and other providers. My office is on the garden floor of a Brooklyn brownstone with a private entrance, a short walk from the F/G at Carroll St.

Support ≠ Commitment
You don’t have to have it all figured out to reach out.
You’re allowed to want change and feel unsure at the same time.
Support doesn’t mean you’ve made a final decision — it just means you don’t have to go it alone.

You don’t have to quit forever to experiment with sobriety.
Start with curiosity. Start small.

Try a dry day. Swap your usual drink for something new.
Notice how you feel. Sleep. Think. Move.

✨ Nearly 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. are trying to drink less — and it’s not just women.
More men in their 30s and 40s are reevaluating their drinking too, especially after big life shifts like becoming parents, changing careers, or just wanting to feel better.

You’re not alone.
You’re not overreacting.
This is about getting clear, feeling better, and living with more intention.

Together, we look at the full picture of your life — and figure out what kind of support makes sense for you.

One slip doesn’t erase your progress. You’re learning. Be kind to yourself.

Most people I work with identify as having a drinking problem.
Some are in long-term recovery; others are just starting to question their relationship with alcohol.

For some, that means abstinence.
For others, it’s about reducing harm and finding healthier coping skills.

Not everyone comes for substance use, though.
Many want to feel better, reduce anxiety, or get support through life transitions.

My approach is warm, open, curious, and direct.
Together, we find what support fits you best

Let’s break the stigma.

Here are 5 myths about addiction that hold people back:

1️⃣ Addiction is just about willpower
2️⃣ You have to hit “rock bottom” before seeking help
3️⃣ Relapse means you’ve failed
4️⃣ You can’t recover if you’ve tried before
5️⃣ You have to do it all alone

Hi, I’m Melanie, a psychotherapist working with adolescents and adults navigating alcohol and substance use challenges, as well as individual therapy.

I understand how our brains can get stuck in patterns that are hard to break — especially when addiction or difficult behaviors are involved. My approach helps you uncover the root of these patterns and create space for real transformation and healing.

Whether you’re curious about sobriety, transitioning through recovery, or simply looking for support to live a fuller life, I’m here to walk alongside you.

I believe in the power of therapy, in your own ability to heal, and in the strength of human will to grow and change.
