We are thrilled to announce a partnership between The Brooklyn Hospital Foundation and the Lee Park Foundation in recognizing two nurses or clinical care staff with the Lotus Award.

The award was created in loving memory of Dr. Jang Ho Lee, a lifelong Buddhist and physician whose legacy seeks to reward and uplift healthcare workers who serve their patients with kindness and love, just as he was treated by his care team in his final days.

Anyone can nominate a TBHC care provider for a chance to receive the Lotus Award and $10,000. Visit www.tbh.org/lotusaward to submit a nomination!

In 2018 TBHC's Patient Transport team started a back-to-school supplies and backpack drive to support kids and families in our Brooklyn community. In 2020, we lost our friend and colleague, Ed who was on that team of transporters and had been a champion of this TBHC summer tradition.

Since then we've done our best to honor his legacy and are proud to have celebrated another fabulous "Ed Becote Back to School" event full of music, laughter, ice cream and smiling faces — just the way he'd want it to be. We raised over $5,000 which allowed us to provide 200 backpacks stuffed with school supplies to children in local shelters, and an additional 300 that were given to local families.

It's a joy and a privilege to keep Ed's spirit of generosity alive and to serve our community in big ways and small.

Matthew Arrington had a goal to lose his “pandemic pounds” and enjoy life without the physical restrictions of his weight. TBHC’s bariatric surgery program wasn’t familiar to him, but a friend’s experience opened his eyes to this Brooklyn option that is the equal of any bariatric care anywhere. “Between my surgeon, Dr. Peter Einersen, and my registered dietitian, Tori Endow, I felt the most comfortable I’ve ever felt with a hospital.” Mr. Arrington has so far lost 70 pounds and is counting on losing more!

Yesterday, we celebrated National Night Out with police and community partnerships! Special thanks to the NYPD 88th Precinct and 88th Community Council for hosting all the fun activities and facilitating the community partner tables that gave out resources to our neighbors. We are grateful for all the TBHC staff who helped with our screenings and tabling at this great event!

Adrina Banks-Martin has been appointed Chair of the Board of Trustees at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, following her tenure on both the Board and the Community Advisory Board. Ms. Banks-Martin’s election reflects a broader, ongoing mission to prioritize building a board that more closely resembles TBHC and its culturally rich community. “We now have people who have grown up in the neighborhood, as well as people who are new to the community,” Ms. Banks-Martin says. A retired Project Manager in Global Finance Firmwide Financial Business Architecture with J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Ms. Banks-Martin has a full grasp of both the pride and challenges that come with being a community hospital in a city full of corporate-funded entities. “Our clinicians, staff and administrative teams leverage relationships and do a yeoman’s job of making sure that we provide cutting-edge care in a time of scarce resources," she says.

On Wednesday, June 24, 2026 we were joined by two compassionate and civic-minded members of the Brooklyn Metropolis Lions Club, Inc., Dr. Janille Williams and Paula Spann, who presented Debbie Niederhoffer of The Brooklyn Hospital Foundation with a check to support colon cancer awareness and education in our community.

We are tremendously grateful to be selected as the recipient of this generous gift. The donation came from a recent fundraising campaign organized by the Lions and the collective efforts of the club’s members.

The Brooklyn Hospital Center thanks the Brooklyn Metropolis Lions Club, Inc. for its steadfast commitment to serve and strengthen local communities.
