True Care Tips πŸ’‘

If your loved one gets upset during toileting when you try to assist with wiping, modesty is one of the most common reasons. This simple tip can help a lot of people.

🚽 Cover up first. Place a towel around them during the process. Something as simple as that can make them feel more comfortable and cooperative.

πŸ—£οΈ Use simple words. Tell them what you are doing at each step, face them as much as possible and never stand over them.

πŸ™ Ask permission. It is their body and being touched without warning can feel very scary. Always ask before you assist.

🀝 Involve them in the process. Have them place their hand on top of yours so they are connected to what is happening. Try saying "We are going to clean up now." This connects the brain to the action and makes being touched feel less scary.

πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ If they physically cannot reach to clean, get an assessment from an Occupational Therapist.

Every person living with dementia is different, so always consult with their doctor or care team to find the best approach for your loved one πŸ’™

Our Bronx caregivers showed up and so did we. 🧑

Last week, we hosted our Caregiver Wellness Day. A morning dedicated entirely to the incredible people who show up every day for our clients. Our caregivers joined us for meaningful conversations on nutrition and fiber, an important discussion on understanding dementia and Alzheimer's and how to best care for patients and loved ones, complimentary blood pressure screenings, plus raffles, giveaways, and so much love in the room.

We appreciate everything you do. πŸ’›

True Care Tips πŸ’‘

Transferring from a wheelchair to a walker does not have to feel scary. Whether you do this yourself or you support someone who does, here is a simple technique worth knowing:

🦽 Instead of holding both hands on the armrest before reaching for the walker, try the one-in-one technique.

☝️ One hand stays on the armrest for support while the other hand is already on the walker. This way, when you let go of the armrest, the transition is seamless and you never feel off balance.

πŸ”„ Play around with which hand is forward and which is back to find what feels most comfortable for you.

Small adjustments make a big difference in feeling safe and confident. Save this and share it with someone who could use this tip. πŸ’™

True Care Tips πŸ’‘

Most people who use a cane are making this one mistake without even knowing it. Using the cane on the same side as the injured leg actually puts more pressure on it, not less.

🦯 Here is the fix: Always hold your cane on the opposite side of your injured leg. This helps distribute your weight away from the injury and keeps your balance steady while you walk. This mimics natural walking patterns and shifts your center of gravity, relieving up to 25% of the weight and pressure on that leg.

It is a small change that makes a big difference. Share this with someone who uses a cane. πŸ’™

True Care Tips πŸ’‘

Before any wheelchair transfer, the setup matters just as much as the transfer itself. Here is what every caregiver should know:

πŸ”’ Position the chair close to the surface you are transferring to, whether it is a bed, chair, or toilet. The smaller the gap, the safer the move.

πŸ”’ Lock the brakes before anything else. Gently rock the chair to confirm it is stable before you begin.

🦡 Swing away the leg rests by pulling the latch toward you. This clears the path and gives space for the feet during the transfer.

πŸ’Ί Remove the armrest if needed. Press the button on the side and pull it back. This creates a clear, unobstructed path for a lateral transfer.

⚠️ Know your chair. Every wheelchair model is different. Always check how your specific brakes, leg rests, and armrests work before attempting a transfer.

Getting these steps right protects both the caregiver and the person in their care. Save this and share it with someone who needs it. πŸ’™

True Care Tips πŸ’‘

Going up and down the stairs with a cane does not have to be intimidating. Whether you use a cane or you support someone who does, here is a simple trick worth knowing:

🦯 Keep your cane on the strong side, opposite of your weaker leg. They always move together.

⬆️ Going up? Up with the good. Lead with your strong leg first, put your weight on it to stabilize, then bring the weaker leg and cane up together.

⬇️ Going down? Down with the bad. Lead with the weak leg and cane together first, then follow with the strong leg.

Just remember: up with the good, down with the bad. It is that simple. Save this and share it with someone who could use this reminder.

πŸ’™ Everyone is different, so always check with your doctor or physical therapist to find what works best for you.
