Eastern Parkway is car free from Grand Army Plaza out toward Brownsville on the 22nd, and a lot of people are planning to skate the whole stretch.

Worth knowing what that asks of you. Skating keeps you in a partial squat and drives force out to the side instead of straight back, and your outside ankle stabilizes the entire time. Four hours of that on legs used to sidewalks usually shows up in the front of the hip. Anyone doing the full route?

If you're training for November, you've probably got the Pulaski in your legs by now. Late August is when bridge work starts showing up in almost every plan.

Going up shortens your stride and loads the calf and achilles. Coming down shifts it to the front of the knee. Six repeats and your lower leg does work that flat greenway miles never ask for. Anyone else feeling it the next day instead of during the run?

You know the drill at the Greenpoint Ave G stop. Stroller folded under one arm, kid on the other hip, thirty pounds of gear headed up those stairs while somebody behind you waits.

What I notice with new parents is that it's the same arm every time. Your back leans and twists to balance that load, a few times a day, all summer long. By evening the ache sits on one side only. Which side is yours?

Court time at McCarren is booked solid right now. US Open coverage starts up, and half the people out there haven't held a racquet since college.

What I usually find: the shoulder gets blamed, but the mid-back is the part that quit moving. A serve needs that area to arch and rotate at once, and when it can't, the shoulder covers the difference. How fast did you ramp up this summer?

The McCarren loop is full of interval walkers this summer. Three minutes brisk, three minutes easy, five rounds. Easy trend to start, and a good one.

The fast blocks are where it gets interesting. A brisk pace needs your hips to open up behind you, and stiff hips make your low back arch to fake the stride. That's why some people finish a walk with a sore back instead of tired legs. If that's been you, the hips are worth a look before the back takes the blame.

The free public paddles on Newtown Creek might be the best thing Greenpoint gives away all summer. Volunteers get you in a kayak in a few minutes, even if you've never done it.

The part nobody warns you about is the neck. A paddle stroke is supposed to come from your trunk turning, but most first-timers pull with the arms while the mid-back sits still, and the neck ends up covering for it. Did your shoulders talk to you the next morning?

Under the K Bridge Park finally gave Greenpoint a real venue, and plenty of you are out there four hours straight barely moving your feet.

Standing in one spot is harder on your low back than walking is. Same small muscles hold you up the whole set, and concrete gives nothing back, so your hips and calves absorb it. Anyone else wake up the next day wondering why such a good night hurt that much?

Half of Greenpoint moved apartments this weekend, and the walk-up stairs did most of the damage. Nobody's low back complains on moving day, though. It waits.

Usually day two or three, when you bend down for a box you still haven't unpacked and something back there locks up. Bending and twisting at the same time is what loads your discs, not the weight of the box. Anyone else stiff and staring at a pile of cardboard right now?

School is still weeks away and the backpack wall is already up at every store around Greenpoint. Your kid will pick by color in about four seconds. That part's fine. Two wide straps and a bag that sits high on the back matter more.

Load it with real books before you pay for it and have them walk a lap around the store. If one shoulder creeps up or they lean forward to carry it, wrong bag. Watch what they do in the first ten steps.

A daily e-bike ride along Franklin Street or Manhattan Avenue can mean potholes, curb cuts, and plenty of time leaning toward the handlebars. By the end of the commute, your hands, neck, or low back may feel more tired than they did at the start.

Check your seat height, keep a relaxed grip, and change hand position when it's safe to do so. If discomfort keeps returning after your rides, I look at your history, how you sit and move on the bike, and what your commute demands. Small setup details matter, but your full movement pattern matters too.
