We love to see a finished project. Doing something from start to finish. Having an element of creative. Clients sometimes get to participate in leather working- an activity where they get to choose an item they hope to make and create something they can take with them. It takes patience and determination to follow through!

How rad is this bag that a client made recently. We hope years from now they'll find this bag and that it can be full of positive memories of their time at Elements!

Parents see the change too.

Across 1,608 admissions at Elements Programs, mean Total Score (YOQ-2.01, parent report) dropped for both mothers (96.5 → 41.8) and fathers (95.2 → 50.5) between admission and discharge — a statistically significant, clinically meaningful change, not just everyday fluctuation.

Just as important: those gains were still holding a full year later. Discharge-to-1-year averages showed no meaningful reversal — treatment gains sustained, not just treatment gains achieved.

Have you ever heard someone say,

"He's just got Peter Pan Syndrome."

Or...

"She's a classic case of Failure to Launch."

These phrases are often used interchangeably—but they don't mean the same thing. More importantly, neither is an official mental health diagnosis. A young adult who struggles to become independent may be dealing with far more than a lack of motivation. Anxiety, depression, ADHD, executive functioning challenges, trauma, substance use, or other underlying issues may all play a role. That's why it's so important to look beyond the label and ask a better question:

What might be getting in the way?

In my newest Horizon Family Solutions Resource Center article, I explain the differences between Peter Pan Syndrome and Failure to Launch, why the distinction matters, and how families can support young adults with greater understanding, healthy boundaries, and hope.

Parents of young adults struggling with substance use often carry a weight that few people truly understand. It's the weight of unanswered phone calls. The sleepless nights. The constant wondering if your child is safe. The difficult balance between helping and enabling. The fear of making the wrong decision.

While much of the attention rightly focuses on the person struggling with substance use, we sometimes forget that parents are navigating their own journey—one filled with uncertainty, grief, hope, and unconditional love. The truth is...

Parents need support, too.

You don't have to have all the answers. You don't have to carry the burden alone.

In my newest Horizon Family Solutions Resource Center article, I explore the emotional challenges parents face and why seeking guidance can make all the difference—for both you and your family.

Have you ever heard someone described as "treatment-resistant"?

Sometimes that label is accurate. But sometimes it raises an important question:

What if the real issue isn't that treatment has failed... but that the underlying condition has never been fully identified?

Mental health is complex. Trauma, ADHD, autism, bipolar disorder, medical conditions, sleep disorders, co-occurring diagnoses, and other factors can all affect how someone responds to treatment.

When someone has been through multiple therapists, medications, or treatment programs without lasting improvement, it may be time to ask a different question:

Has anyone truly looked at the whole picture?

A comprehensive evaluation can sometimes uncover pieces of the puzzle that have been overlooked and open the door to more effective care.

I explore this important topic in my latest Horizon Family Solutions Resource Center article:

When "Treatment-Resistant" May Actually Be Underdiagnosed

If you or someone you love feels stuck, you're not alone—and there may be more to the story than you realize.

If you'd like guidance in navigating complex mental health concerns or understanding treatment options, Scott at Horizon Family Solutions has extensive experience helping families find clarity and determine the next best step.
