Finding a lump can be alarming, but it's important to remember that many breast lumps are not cancerous.

Benign conditions such as cysts, fibroadenomas, or normal hormonal changes can all cause changes in breast tissue. That's why imaging plays such an important role. A diagnostic mammogram and breast ultrasound allow radiologists to evaluate the area in greater detail and determine whether additional testing is needed.

Receiving a diagnosis for dense breast tissue is extremely common and simply describes the amount of fibrous and glandular tissue compared to fatty tissue within the breast. While it's completely normal, dense tissue can make it more difficult to detect certain abnormalities on a mammogram.
That's why your healthcare provider may recommend additional imaging, such as an ultrasound, based on your individual risk factors, family history, and breast density.

Receiving a call after your mammogram can naturally cause worry, but a callback doesn't mean you have breast cancer. Additional imaging is often recommended because the radiologist wants a better view of an area, especially if breast tissue is dense or if overlapping tissue makes an image difficult to interpret. Our goal is always the same: to provide accurate answers while supporting you with compassion and clear communication throughout the process.

The goal isn't to create fear, it's to provide clarity. Understanding what's happening is the first step toward making informed decisions about your health.
