Jack and Emrole, were licensed embalmers. In 1944, the firm moved to West Commerce Street in Brownstown. The business then expanded in 1956 and H. Jack and his wife Margaret built the present facility on East Commerce Street in Brownst

own. Jack Spurgeon operated the business after his father died in 1928. He and his wife Margaret then operated the firm until his death in 1977. Mrs. Spurgeon, along with their sons, Larry R. and Jack D., ran the business until her death in 1994. In 2021, the Spurgeon Family transitioned ownership to Luke & Caitlin Nolting, both lifelong residents of Jackson County. We are proud of our family’s long tradition of funeral service. We have served several generations of our friends and neighbors. This fact demonstrates our commitment to you and the entire community -- a long-lasting dedication to serving others in the best and worst of times one can know. To us, personal service is important whether it is before a loss, during the arrangements for a loss, or after a loss.

Janet (Hancher) Otte

Janet (Hancher) Otte, age 69, of Seymour, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Columbus Regional Hospital with her loving family by her side.

Mrs. Otte was a faithful and devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers, where she was actively involved and her faith remained a guiding force throughout her life. She chaired and organized the church supper and bazaar, coordinated quilt deliveries as part of the church’s longstanding support of Lutheran World Relief, and assisted in the Cradle Roll at the church.

Janet was employed by Seymour Community Schools at Cortland Elementary before retiring. She cherished her time at home, where she found great joy in caring for and doing things for her family. She also enjoyed vacationing with her family at their cabin in Wisconsin.

Family was the center of Janet’s life. She particularly enjoyed her grandchildren and took great pleasure in spending time with them and spoiling them with love and affection. She especially loved making brownies with them. Janet also loved spending time in the kitchen making comfort foods and desserts, sewing, working in her flowers, and tending to pets and animals she adored.

Born on June 3, 1956, in Columbus, Janet was the daughter of Thomas “Jack” and Lela Mae (Taylor) Hancher, both of whom preceded her in death. On April 12, 1980, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers, she married Paul Otte, and he survives in Seymour.

Survivors also include one daughter, Jessica Otte of Seymour; one son, Nathan (Jacelyn) Otte of Seymour; two grandchildren: Owen Otte and Quinn Otte; one sister, Gretchen Bode of Seymour; and one sister-in-law, Judy Hancher.

Janet was also preceded in death by two brothers: Jerry (TJ) Hancher and Jon Hancher; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arthur and Bertha (Stockamp) Otte; two dogs: Carly and Mia; and one cat, Bynx.

Funeral services for Janet (Hancher) Otte will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2026, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers, with Pastor Steve Wood and Elizabeth Sheedy officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2026, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers.

Interment will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers Cemetery.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we cherish, and their legacy lives on in the hearts of those who love them.

As we gather with family and friends, may we also take a moment to reflect with gratitude on those who served and never returned home.
