Fear of weight loss surgery is completely understandable. Any operation can feel overwhelming, especially when you’ve heard stories online or from people around you.

But one of the biggest misconceptions is that bariatric surgery is the “easy way out.” In reality, it’s a tool that helps patients regain their health, not replace healthy habits. Success still requires commitment to nutrition, exercise, follow-up care, and lifelong lifestyle changes.

For many patients, the greater risk isn’t having surgery. It’s living with untreated obesity. Obesity increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, joint damage, certain cancers, and a shorter life expectancy. For appropriately selected patients, bariatric surgery has been shown to improve or even resolve many of these conditions while significantly improving quality of life.

If fear is keeping you from exploring your options, ask questions. Learn the facts. Meet with a bariatric surgeon. You deserve to make a decision based on evidence, not fear.

Weight loss medication and weight loss surgery aren’t one-size-fits-all. In general, medications may be an option for people with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with obesity-related conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. Weight loss surgery is typically considered for those with a BMI of 35 or higher, regardless of related conditions, or a BMI of 30 or higher with significant obesity-related health conditions. The best treatment depends on your overall health, medical history, and long-term goals. Talk with a qualified bariatric surgeon to find the option that’s right for you.

You may qualify if you have a BMI of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 or higher with health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea. If you’ve struggled to lose weight despite diet, exercise, or medications, it may be time to explore your options.

Weight loss after bariatric surgery isn’t meant to continue forever. As you lose weight, your body naturally requires fewer calories, so your metabolism adjusts. Reaching a plateau doesn’t mean your surgery stopped working. It means your body is finding its new balance. The goal isn’t endless weight loss, it’s long-term health and maintaining your results.

Can your stomach stretch back out after bariatric surgery? The short answer is yes, to a degree. Your stomach is designed to stretch when you eat, but it doesn’t usually return to its original size after surgery. Consistently overeating can increase your stomach’s capacity over time, which is why portion control and healthy habits remain important long after surgery. Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool, but long-term success comes from how you use it.

Every day, I see patients become emotional over things many people never think twice about. Crossing their legs. Tying their shoes. Fitting comfortably in a restaurant booth. Walking without pain. Playing with their grandchildren.

Bariatric surgery isn’t just about losing weight. It’s about getting your life back. Time and time again, my patients tell me the same thing: “I only wish I had done it sooner.”

Seeing someone get a second chance at life is one of the greatest privileges of being a bariatric surgeon.

In April 2026, I had the privilege of returning to Panama for my third year serving with Healing International Medical Mission.

In just three days, our team performed 30 surgeries, provided nearly 1,000 pairs of glasses to patients with vision problems, and offered diabetes education to help families better understand their health.

Every year, this mission reminds me why I do what I do. It is an honor to serve alongside such a dedicated team and to care for communities that welcome us with so much gratitude. 🇵🇦
